Audio we talking AM or SSB audio? Here's a good trick turn the mic gain to about 2 O'Clock on AM and try that SSB try 3.

I'm guessing that your clarifier "center-slot" is no longer center frequency. There's possibly a chance that you may be transmitting off frequency a bit. Try moving the clarifier knob to around 9 or 10 o-clock position and see if that doesn't clean your audio up on both transmit and receive. If that doesn't help, try going the other direction to around 2 or 3 o-clock position.

When doing that 10-12Khz clarifier slide modification, you will generally lose your original center-slot/center-frequency position.
This is where having a frequency counter in circuit always helps since it will tell you exactly where you are in frequency. Otherwise, it's all a guessing game.

You didn't say if he did anything with the audio section or not but if he pulled the audio-limiter out, then the only thing I can suggest is to turn the Mic-Gain down to around the 12 to 1 o-clock position. It's possible that you may just be over modulating the radio some.

It's really difficult to say since you never mentioned what modifications were done to your radio. The only modification that you mentioned was the clarifier. And that spells transmitting "Off Frequency" to me!

I hope my post makes some sense to you and helps in some sort of way.
