Sonoma,

Actually some of the radio shack models where non-modifiable. It'a also similar to the Eagle Sidewinder 400 If you want to try it here's the mods for each.

Eagle Sidewinder 400

There is a small PC board on the right side near the front of the radio with 3 solder pads. Short pins 2 and 3 and leave 1 open.

It may also have two jumpers on the older models. In this case move both of them from pins 1 and 2 to pins 2 and 3.

RV5 - AMC
RV6 - ALC
RV4 - AM Power
RV7 - TX Meter

Magnum 257

Unsolder D2.

Reset the radio CPU by temporarily shorting the two front panel circuit board pads.

Hook the radio back up to power and turn on the radio.

Press the FUNC button, then press and hold the CALL button for approx. 3 seconds. The band indicator will appear on LCD.

Use the CALL button to select bands.

To switch between channel and frequency display, press the FUNC button and press the CALL button.

RV1 - S-Meter
RV4 - AMC
RV8 - RF Meter
RV9 - ALC
RV14 - FM Power
RV16 - AM Carrier

Let me know if these work.

For the year i used them everyone seemed to want to know that but i dont have a need to run illegual radios. To answer your question they do not modifiy like the 257 since i only use them on 10 meters it dosnt mater to me. Now for cb i have a galaxy 959 i use. I added the filters diodes and audio mods of reciver but leagual mods no xmit mods no cut limiters. Now if your a ham rightwing the rad-shack is a solid little radio and much beter than a ranger 2950 and cheaper no problems with frount end slop.

Maycom makes the HTX 10,Roadpro Titan II,Magnum 257,all Eagle and Cherokee radios, and many others. They are a VERY big Asian manufacturer who private labels a lot of products including audio and so forth.Although a lot of them look the same on the outside, there can be differences inside. The newer clones of the HTX10 with the surface mount boards pretty much modify the same way.The main difference is that some have dual finals and variable wattage (Magnum 257) and therefore a little more output power. They are inexpensive and quality wise are decent for the money.I bought a RoadPro Titan II for around $80.00 brand new on an eBay auction and did the same mod as shown on the Bill's 2way site for the Magnum 257 and it worked out fine.I have gotten good signal and audio quality reports both mobile and with a power supply as a base unit.I still like the feel and quality of my RCI radios though but of course I paid more for them.If someone wants a cheap way to get on the 11 meter freebands and talk all over the country I reccomend one of these units.I have a friend who has a Titan II and a Magnum Delta Force (which uses the same basic board and freq display etc) and has had good luck with both.Maybe this would be a good line for Copper to carry.

hi sonoma, i also have the HTX 10 and while the board seems to look the same it is not. i find it hard to beleive that you did this mod under the pretense of it being the same. the magnum, the titan11 and a few others also look the same ,but are not.

radio shack got into trouble with the fcc over one of their earlier 10mtr rigs being modifiable and now will not sale -ANY- radio in the 10/11mtr area that is capable of being modified for expanded freqs. so yes maycom is making the radio, but they are making it by r.shacks rules.

so i am sorry guys, but unless you change the processor you better get a license if you plan to use a htx-10.

no icepick, radioshack radios are not. if they are, then share with us the modification.

uniden was busted also, and this is why the 2510 is not around any more(you can't even buy the modifiable cpu chip from them any more). and rci/galaxy did get in trouble. i won't get into this as it involves the arrest of someone very high up in the manufacturing of these companies products. it happened several years ago and he got off for the fact that the bigger ham companies were not being pursued. -but- if you look at yeasu(vertex), kenwood, and icom they all produce lmr(business band) radios also. so you can call it favortism on the fcc's part for why some were/are pursued while others are not. the fact that he got off on the technicality of others not being busted is most likely why no one is really being busted anymore. -but- radio shack is still not taking the chance.

i'm interested in seeing your mod for these. list just one radio in production by radio shack in the 10/11mtr band that is expandable for 'extra' freqs????

ss8541 ,i agrre with what you said about not being able to buy the modifiable chips for the 2510. then again chipswitch is available. so who needs unidens chips? they in my opinion shot themselves in the foot.so to speak.

Tell me more of this PLZ.

This is as close as I got.

I had A titan Rpsy-485 With problems. I went online and got a NIB HTX-10. The titan had cheep filters but 11M modable. HTX-10 board + titan CPU/front board=MAG.257 without variable power. This is a new life For all of those titan, egale sidewinder ect. So hang on to those HTX-10's they are good parts for all of those titan, egale sidewinder ect. IMHO, I-b-a-cb-freq

Parting out a Htx-10 should be punished by being banned from radio for LIFE! That is one of the better 10 meter radios, what a waste.
