I am going to buy a 2m mobile, but I don't want to add another antenna on my vehicle for the second radio. My question is, can I run a 2m radio with a Maco-91 match box and a Euro AS-100 on a 102" whip?

joe forget the match box but as long as you run the radio on low power it should work { somewhat } into that whip. BEST go get a hustler 5/8 wave SF-2 whip about $15 and swap them when you change radios. |

Good idea Bruce since they both have a 3/8 thread but i think he wants to do it all by not getting out of the car.
Joe, I doubt very much that your Maco matchbox will let you tune the 102 whip that far. If this is the one I'm thinking of, it barely covers the CB band. We're talking 27MHz way up to 144--148MHz. Now that is a "VERY, VERY" wide frequency spectrum you're trying to cover my friend.
Even if you could tune the 102 whip that far with your tuner, there would be such a RF power loss at 2-meters that you probably wouldn't be heard very far anyways. Why don't you just throw a little 2-meter mag-mount up there?
Just in the event you do not know, a matchbox will absord a high SWR between it and your radio. But you would still have a screaming SWR between the matchbox and the antenna. In otherwords, the matcbox will save the life of your radio.
The farther you get away from the tuned frequency spectrum of your antenna, the higher the SWR will go. And sometimes it can be so high that even the most expensive antenna-tuner on the market can't help you.

its just so easy to swap them thats what i do i carry 2/murs 6 10 11 15 17 meters in the trunk all fit a 3/8 mount and all i do is swap the radio ( i carry the cb set and 2 meter in the trunk ) and my ft-100d gets droped on the seat when i feel a need to go moble with BIG radio! |

Some people like to monitor both radios at once, changing the whips wont allow you to do that, what about a multiband antenna with a splitting box? I want to run a two meter in my truck, and the trusty connex is staying in, I might run two antennas though. I use a diamond multiband antenna for my 4 band Yaesu 8900 and it seems to work well. |

Hey Bruce, or anyone else that might know.
Could a 102" steel whip be cut to one full 2m wavelength (approx 6.5') and be used, or wuold it change the impedance of the antenna and not be tunable? If that wont work, and I go with the Hustler SF2, would it be ok if it is mounted about 2.5' behind the rear windshield, 1' from a steel whip used for 11m, and only the top 1' above the cab?

I'm talking about taking a 102" whip cutting it to approx 80" and using it for the 2m band. Instead of a 1/4 wave, or a 5/8 wave, it would be a full wave antenna for the 2m band.

Don't expect miracles with only 1 foot of it peeking over your cab and 3 feet if it hidden. And don't expect a good SWR.
By the time you get up into 2 meters, antenna location can become a little more critical when placed next to metal or another antenna. The idea is to get metal "under" the antenna--not next to it.
