Sonny,

WELCOME to the COPPER FORUM!

You are probably one of very few who know what a STONER is.

And if you Own a STONER you are a Very Lucky Person.

I was lucky enough to meet Don back in the 70's, and he was a great down to earth guy and a lot of laugh's.

Ever see his Merceades Desk with his Stoner in it?

http://www.cbgazette.com/Donaldstoner.html

The Radio & Ham world lost a great person & Radio Designer when he passed on.

I am still trying to find a Nice one hopefully Serial Numbered under 1000.

As you are new to the Forum Check out the CEF Net Information in the Announcement area or in the Open area here on the Forum.

Sonny,

With that Radio you need to Join our CEF Group for the Sunday CEF Net's.

While other radio's are Good and some Great on SSB your Stoner is FANTASTIC.

Everyone would enjoy hearing a Radio that was Designed and Built just for SSB.

And for those who do not know what a Stoner is IT DOES NOT HAVE AM in it.

It was Designed & Built Strictly for the Utmost Performance on SSB.

My Life's Dream is to someday own one.

Hey Bruce,

Hope your doing well. Yep, the radio's you have are a wonderful piece of communications history. I have no doubt you are very proud of them. As well you should be. I lost my old Heathkit to a fire back in 1984 When they are fully restored you should take a picture and post it here for all of us to share. I would love to see them.

The only Base station radio I've had was the ROYCE 642 in the late 1970's. Had allot of fun on the upper 40 channels on SSB, very few people between 32-40 so it didn't take a kw to get out. Have used a bunch of mobile radios as base stations but..

Favorite Base Radio...Gee that's tough!! I have collected CB Radios for the last 25 years and have over 100 new, old stock units in the origianl boxes. I am VERY fond of the Realistic TRC-457/458 and the microprosessor controlled 459. However, my personal favorite is the CPI-2000. I own 2 of them with all the accesssories and they were so far ahead of their time it was indredable!!! Keep up the good work on the forum.

I have a couple hundred now, and probably have owned about 500 in the past. My all time fav's are 1. Budy Base-by far the loudest radio ever
2. ARF 2001-loud and broadcast TX, lousy rec
3. Stoner Pro 40-best SSB ever, but SSB only
4. Demco Satelite-loud and fun to play with
5. Tram D201 w/vox-great all around without the problems of the newer Trams
6. Browning Mark 4A-Silky smooth TX and RX
7. Browning Mark 2 w/Collins filter early Mark II's or I's with the Collins filter talk like Browning's, but rec broadcast commercial quality. The best rec ever.
8. Tram Titan II and IV- excellent TX, and near best rec
9. Johnson Ranger II or Valient II- ham Transmitters w/ outstanding broadcast audio
10. Polycom Polypro- 5 nuvistors w/ outstanding RX and TX and built like commercial
Cobra's-Galaxy's, exports, etc aren't even in the same league. Like comparing a Mustang to a Porsche- No contest.

Redwolf and Tecni, are the 457 and 458 basically the same radio? I am about to acquire a 457 and cant find much info about them on the net, but lots on the 458. The 457 is replacing my ill fated Courier PLL that has problems transmitting on side band. Always had good luck with them Ratshacks and i love my TRC-453 mobile unit that i'm now using as my base as well. Would also like to do a channel mod on it at some point.

Utica ...........theres a blast from the past.
intresting.....
Brewdirect nice looking set.

Thats a classic Oldie they made some cormercal/ ham rigs too. The small 6 meter one was not bad and everyonce and a while you see one for sale.
You might remember at that time the Courer 1M a tripal conversion radio that for its day was top dog if they had followed the first mixer with a if stage that receiver would be decent even for todays receivers.

Yellow Robyn....I was only 14 when a friend of mine owned this awsome radio. On a Shakespeare and barefoot he could talk to every corner of Indy at anytime and was heard all over Indiana on clear nights. He was such a troublemaker and the radio was destroyed when it went flying out the window.Somebody tied a chain to his antenna and hooked it to there 4wd truck and squeeled rubber. All the witnesses saw was sparks, poles, white sticks, black wire and a yellow box traveling down the road behind a truck at a high rate of fuel consumption. A tear came to my eye because I knew I was gonna get that radio someday. Funny thing he was back on the air the next night but no Yellow Robyn and no more booming adjetation.

Being as how it is screwed down and doesn't go mobile. I have to say my Uniden Grant XL, although I have several base radios and also have owned a Cobra 2000 GTL and a few other base radios over the years since 1963. None have been a match for the XL the way it's set up and with the FC-347. I'm not one to brag, but it's going to take a lot of radio to knock my XL down and take it's place. It has taken about twenty years of trial and error including some of the export radios, plus a large investment in different radio equipement to build the station I now run on 11 meters sideband. Yes, I've been all the way to a Kenwood and an ICOM and still have them, but do not run them on 11 meters.

Since getting back into CB, I haven't had much of an opportunity to use my base setup (currently have an Excalibur SSB and a Ham International Jumbo)

1. Ham International Jumbo (completely worked over)

This Excalibur I have is very impressive, too. But I haven't had much of an opportunity to really use it. I live in an Apt. =(

Over the last 30 years or so I have had many good base radios. I have bought and sold and traded and I now have three that are my favorites...
I will list them in MY priority. . .

RCI-2985DX with Astatic 575M6 mic.

Robyn SB-540D with Astatic D-104 mic.

Uniden Washington with Astatic 575M6 mic.
(New in 1982 / 8719 PLL / 100% stock)

Love those 575M6 mic's.
Still looking for one or two more. . .

Thats it from the Southwest corner of Wisconsin.

Hope to make contact with more CEF members on 13LSB.

73 for now and God Bless to all, John

My favorite base is my 2985dx since it is back and working, I love all the features.

second would be the 2000 GTL I got rid of.

third would me my Madison and fourth would be the President Washington that I sold.

these are all I ever owned.

2000 GTL great too.
O yeah, my favorite mobile is the realistic trc-415. Google it. Sick radio.

I have not owned a CB base radio since 1985, only mobile type rigs in the shack. Between 1975 and 1985 I owned 3 Cobra base radios. The Cam 89, the 139XLR and a 2000. Even though the 2000 was a very cool, big radio, I liked the 139XLR the best. I still Kinda miss that rig!

I dunno I really love my GE Superbase...I aquired this radio from my grandfather about 15 years ago.
He did all the work on it himself and I decided that it needed and endless echo. It has only had two pair of hands in it and it has never once let me down. I have no idea how old it is but I do know it is a biggun. I have moved to three different houses since I got this radio and no matter where I have lived I have always been told that it is the cleanest sounding rig in town.

so yeah the SUPERBASE it is.

favorite tranzie radio is the TRC 457. between the tube radios i gotta say it's a tie between my Cobra Cam 88 & my Browning S-9 Transmitter/R2700 receiver. but for SSB i use a Siltronix 1011D Commanche complete with Siltronix LA 650 amp, Siltronix SP 1011 speaker,Siltronix FD 1011 frequncy counter & Siltronix PM 15 power meter. When i wanna chase international DX love this radio with its tuning dial a lot of International DX on the upper sides of freqs like 275700 275600.275000.

Hello Russell, Glad to know I have an active fellow CEF member locally! We contacted a few times before on channel 38 LSB I think. I'm that guy down here in Franklin, just south of Indy. I just go by 491 on SSB.
I get in there and hollar at Danny, Joe and Bud once in a while. You can always count on Danny being on the air at almost anytime. Does that guy ever sleep?! Best group of operators out there and always friendly.
Anyway next time I hear you I'll give you a shout!
