i'm having trouble with my 99v. When i transmit the needle isnt moving at all, but receiving the needle moves fine. I just hooked this radio back up after a few years of storing it away. I tried asking for a radio check but there isnt anyone responding. I can hear my self on talk back, but again the needle isnt moving on transmit. any ideas? thanks for reading |

Is it the same mic that you are using on a different radio that is tx-ing fine? If not, I would try a different mic and see if that does the trick... |

you hear yourself in the talkback, so the mic is working.
how loud is the talkback and does it sound distorted? the talkback actually is detected from the txing rf. so you must have some rf power being generated. |

i tried the stock mic and a power mic and neither makes the neddle move. the talkback doesnt sound distorted or muffled. |

Do you have other radios that you have been using all along or did you just get back on the air?
If you have a SWR meter, check your coax and antenna system. If you have other radios that are working fine, then i suspect that you may possibly have a blown driver in your 99-V.
I don't remember if the 99 has a PA mode or not but if it does, make sure it's OFF. I just find this pretty strange that the radio was working when you put it away 5 years ago and it doesn't now.

it is not too uncommon that a cap dries out when a radio has been put up several years. when a customer has brought me radios in the past that worked before they were put up and did not when they were used again years later, 95% of the time the problem was a dried out cap.
since the 99v uses an rf sniffer circuit for talkback, you must be working up to the driver stage. that is the 1st level that modulation occurs, which means the 1st level the talkback ciruit can have rf to 'sniff' for audio. if your talkback is as loud as normal then i would look at a stage after the finals.
it could possibly be that the needle just isn't working in tx. you may want to put it on a power meter, or keep trying radio checks.

i thought of something else. if someone did the resistor mod for talkback, you are going to have talkback even if there is not one drop of tx output being generated. there is a way you can test this with another radio. it isn't hard at all, just lay another radio on top of your 99v. stick a wire (not coax, it is shielded) into the antenna port of the 2nd radio. now key your 99v and talk. see if 1) you can tell if the 2nd radio is picking up any output from the 99 and 2) see if there is any modulation heard from the 99v. |

I had another radio that worked fine, but i dont have it anymore. I'm no handyman when it comes to these things, but thanks for the info guys. |
