How much and what type of coax should i use on a Antron-99. It will be put on the roof of a garage,
what should the distance be between the bottom of the antenna and the roof Thanks 619
ps.. I have read in other posts to use 100' and coil the exess next to the radio to help from interference, Is this true, I will be using an old stock Royce639 |

Mount your antenna as high as you can get it.
Depending on How far and How much power you Will or Might run, you can use Mini 8 or RG213 for coax.
Use just what you need to reach from your Antenna to your Radio, and then also figure in if you might move your equipment sometime in the future.
I personaly figured the Length and added 15 Feet in case I decided to move thing's.
Just how I did it.
Tech833 might add something as he is The Resident COPPER ANTENNA EXPERT.
And we all look to him for Guidence.

I've used an A99 for several years in many set ups. Never had a problem with various lengths of coax. The only issue I had was bleeding on my son's stereo (when the stereo wasn't even on). My A99 was only "leaned" up against the house. After I got up in the air, around 65', the problem went away. I've ran coax lenghts from 50' to 100' since raising the ant. w/o problems. That was just my set up though. I hope this helps somewhat.

Hey Lon, unless I have been misinformed all these years, he said in his first post that he was going to coil up all of the excess wire. Is that not a NO NO? I know from my mobile, that only raises SWR's. Why would it not do the same for a base station?

I have about 15' coiled under the floor from the HORZ and VERT of the Beam's and also the Anttron 305.
So far I have had no problem's with SWR on any of them.
NOTE! This is just my personal experience with my setup as Every Setup, Equipment & Location is Different.

I'm surprised that "Keithinatlanta" was the only one that caught that (coiling of the coax) business. And he is absolutely correct.
DO NOT EVER coil excess coax unless you are purposely making a choke of some kind. Either lay it all out somewhere or cut it off. Never coil it up.

OK, KB is the New Award's Manager and I will e-mail him to send you out a Double Pack of Oreo's.
But as I said above:

I will have to check with Homeboy CEF159 to see if it is Coiled or just laying under there. As he is the Last one to go under the Floor to run my coax from the Beam's and Anttron 305 and 2 Meter Anttron.
I do know it is tied to the floor joist's except 15' that is Loose as I can pull it up and stuff it back thru the hole in the floor and I added 15' to all of them and the Rotor cable.

First off, the A99 works best when mounted with the bottom at least 30 feet above ground level. I suggest a minimum of RG8 or 9913 cable. If you have the financial means, purchase LMR-400 or better cable.
Second, if your cable is not too lossy (like RG-58), then coiling some of it will not do anything. A loose coil of cable actually makes a pretty decent lightning choke. A tight coil might not be a good idea due to stray inductance. On fully or double shielded cables like LMR-400 or Heliax, a coil is invisible to the RF. Admittedly, it is best to cut your cables to length when possible. |
