When using a D-104 Mic I was getting some kind of background noise on my RCI 2990. Even when changing to the stock mic I get the same kind of background noise. After turning off everything in the house air conditioners, TV, the noise was still there.
The radio has a big fan connected to the back which comes on atomatically when the radio is turned on. I can barely hear the fans, until I get in my car and talk to my son on the radio.
Then I hear the fan loud and clear all the time he's talking. Any advice on how to correct this problem? Please Help! I appreciate it.

Try turning the 104 all the way down and then turn it back up only about 1/4 of the way opened. From there, just use the Mic Gain on the radio to control your audio level.
D-104s are notorious for picking up ANY and ALL background noise when their volume control is turned up too far. However, you will more than likely still hear some "room noise" when sitting in your car while still in your driveway but as you move away, you'll be surprised how this background noise will fade away and how much cleaner your base will sound.

This noise is also present when I used my stock mike. Also I was 5 miles from my house and still heard the background noise. Even at my friends house several miles away the noise is still there. Mobile Base it's still there. The D-104 is all the way down. I always run it as low as I can and still get my needle to move. I ran a ground wire from the mic to a good ground. Someone told me to try that.

I had a simular problem with my setup a few years back (rci2970). It wasn't the mic but rather everything being grounded. Once I grounded each piece of equipment the noise went away.
On a side note was the NB/ANL turned on? |

Yes, I always have the NB/ANL on. However I am not grounded. I am currently trying to figure out how to do it. Do I run a wire from a screw in the back of the radio to a good ground, and then run another from the antenna to a good ground? I have two peices of coax spliced together. Would it be okay to attatch the ground wire to the barrel connector and then run it down from there? I don't have a way to get my antenna down to do it now.

I ran a wire from the back of the radio to the power supply and a wire from my ground to the power supply. I kept the wires as short as possible and had good results in cutting out the noise. |
