I live in the mountains of PA. I run a galaxy 2517, into a klv 1000. I use an Imax 99 with ground plain kit. I also have an Imax 2000 that I use on my RCI 2990DX.
Anyway, I really smoke with these, however, I want to be able to talk & hear back into NJ.
Because of the mountains, I talk mostly local.
There is not a lot of people up here. The mountains limit me. There is an opening in the mountains twards NJ. I do talk to NJ but I want to do more. Would a beam like the Y-quad do a better job of getting me into NJ (about 45 miles) or am I better off sticking with my Imax?
Thanks
Audioman

Audioman i have a friend in brisbaine austraila who runs a 2 elm Y quad and loves it. As for your I-max it's a good antenna but my guess is the Y quad would gain you some. If i was you and i lived in a place like that i would think of getting my ham license.......and put up one of these.....

Heck if that failed 160 or 75 meters with a KW should work ok even in the mountians.

The Y-quad is not really a quad, it is a hybrid. It boils down to really just a two-element Yagi, a maco m103 has more gain.

I for one would not go to the trouble of installing a beam, rotor, 2 Coax runs, rotor cable and all the associated hardware for just a 2 element beam. I would need at least 3 elements for it to be worth it for me, but that's just me. Now a real 2 element quad or delta-loop like the v-quad is another story. I would vastly prefer either one of those to the Y-quad.

Yes, the Y-Quad will outperform any omni-directional antenna. Any beam will for that matter!

Look at it this way. If you put a little reflector behind a 3 volt DC bulb, you'll end up with a multification factor (of I don't know what) and all energy will be concentrated in a much narrower beam of light. And that in turn enables you to see farther away.

And when it comes to antennas, that's why they are called "beams". Instead of reflecting light energy (Lumination) in a concentrated pattern, they are reflecting RF energy (your RF signal) in a concentrated pattern....like a flash-light.

Ya know, the more I think about it, the phrase "Beam me up Scotty", can't be right.

Does not compute...Please explain.
