A freind of mine has the s45 and just bought a monkey made antenna and 21 feet of coax. He gets an almost 3 on the inernal swr meter when he calibrates it. We tried a number of things to try and get the swr down. Could it be the 21 feet of coax? or could it be that the monkey made antenna and the s45 are just not a good match. We're going to try 18 and 12 feet of coax and see if that makes a difference. If any one has any suggestions or comments, please they will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
SPYDY.

An SWR of 3 shows there is no ground happening. I would search for the problem at the antenna mount.

If no joy, read out the connectors on your coax to make sure it's not shorted.

What type of coax and connectors? What type of antenna mount?

S45 and Monkey Made will match fine.

Thanks for your replies. Al, I think the coax is mini 8 and I'm not sure about the connectors. I'll take my ohm meter to work and check out the coax for a short. The antenna mount is I think made by a company named victory, it's funky looking, never saw one before. It has kind of like eagle talon looking things that do the gripping on the mirror mount, I don't know, it's hard to explain.
Well thanks again, we'll give some more things a try tonight..

Spydrman,

You mention Mirror Mount is this on a Big Truck?

If it is try running a Ground wire from the Mirror Mount and/or antenna to the frame as a Lot of the Big Truck Doors and Mirror Mounts are NOT Grounded or Grounded well.

And Make Sure your Radio is also Grounded Well and drawing power from the Battery or Batteries.

Yes, (I wouldn't quite call it a "BIG TRUCK") We drive Volvos for FedEx Freight out of PA and no they don't have good grounds period. We have to run our antenna's off of what the maintenance shop calls a "bird pirch" it is mounted on the door where the mirror bracket/brace meets the top of the door. We are going to try the wire from the mount to the frame.
Thanks again,

older chevy blazers also use plastic inserts in the doors to hold mirrors on-no ground without wires. many BIG rigs have aluminum cabs and/or doors, that are isolated from battery ground. in that case ground wire from mirror mount hardware to door mount brackets, from door mount to chassis. other potential problem w/monkey-made & allthose types of antennas-coil itself gets bent, touches several rings together, effectively shortening antenna- swr off. make sure coils equally spaced apart.

Thanks again everyone for your replies. He put on his Wilson 5000 and a different mount with a 12 foot coax, he's getting a 1.5 with that. Can live with that.
Thanks again,

Spydrman

I can tell you right now my friend that Volvos "DO NOT, NO WAY SHAPE OR FORM" have grounded cabs. And for the life of me, I do not understand why many of todays truck companies are isolating their cabs from the frames.

Do as Lonnie suggested and get the cab grounded to the main frame or at least get the mirror-mounts grounded.

By the way, I liked your last movie.

Thanks 548, I myself have not seen it. Remember the theme song. "Nobody knows who you are"
