I have a Drake model SW1. It's an AM only ShortWave (SW) receiver. I think it is now discontinued. It is a great SW receiver, but I know I am missing alot of the other bands by the limitations of the radio. Is there a resource available that will modify it to increase it's use on other bands? |

Sadly NO this is a dead radio. Why they didn't include SSB is kind of stupid but ill bet cuting cost was the answer. If its got a 455 khz IF you might try a T-KIT No. 1050 BFO ( TEN-TEC ) otherwise injoy it as is. |

CA, What you have there is one of the BEST ever AM BCB DXing radios ever made. It is what it is. Although missing SSB capability, you are certainly not limited if using it for BCB DX and foreign broadcast. Use it as-is. Every modification I have seen for those radios always comes with some kind of catch. Don't ruin a spectacular radio. |

Okay, gentlemen. I agree it sure has wonderful audio. Solidly built. And it sure brings in the world from my long-wire antenna! I will leave it alone. Bruce, I did purchase the Universal 455KHz BFO from Ten-Tec, but it made no difference whatever on this radio. I also got an external (in line antenna) BFO from CC Radio that made a BIG difference in reception, but I made NO internal changes. |

Radiodude, Several people have added frequency counters to old analog SW radios. See here- http://www.aade.com/dfd3.htm |

Best bet- calibrate your dial tracking. My Zenith M660A is an analog dial type receiver that covers from 150 kc. to 30 MHz. in 5 bands. I spent a great deal of time in the alignment of the receiver to make sure the dial scale tracked accurately. With a properly tracking dial scale, you can set the dial on 10 MHz. and WWV pops out. You do not have to hunt for anything! It is a lot more fun when using an analog radio because it makes 'tuning around' easier. When it is calibrated to the dial scale properly, then it is even more fun because you will know where you are. |
