I just bought a 9000 from Copper, great radio except when I first turn it on it will drift back and forth from 27mhz to 30mhz.After it "warms" up it works fine.Does anyone know what causes this and how do I fix it?

Snowman,

It drifts a whole 3 MHz? Wow! Mine does drift a bit when it is cold or hot and I bring it to regular temperature in the cabin, but once it has equalized, it is rock solid. I'm talking a drift of may a couple of hundred hertz or so, not 3 MHz! Sounds like some different thing causing this than what is causing my drifting!

The radio will actually go to 30mhz and stick there for a few minutes and then work fine. Also, what would be a good antenna to run with this radio?I already have a 102" steel whip.

Snowman,

Stick with the whip, if it works well for you (i.e. good SWR, good reports on the air, etc.).

However, keep in mind that even the 102" whip may not be able to adequately cover the entire frequency range of the modified VR9000. The radio goes from about 25.615 MHz (?) on band A to 28.305 MHz at the end of band F! If your whip works well say from 26.965 MHz (CB Ch 1) on up to around 28 MHz, it may not be broadbanded enough to cover the lower frequencies on bands A, B and C. In such a case, I suggest getting a second antenna, preferrably a good quality, fairly broadbanded one, and mounting it as far away from the whip as possible.

On my car, I'm using a 5 foot tuneable Firestick (a top-loaded antenna, which I prefer) mounted directly into the metal of the station wagon at the back (just in front of the gate), that is tuned for the upper bands (actually, band C, channel 30 clear up to 28.305 MHz).

The second antenna is a center-mounted, open coil design similar to a Workman SP 3000 series. It is mounted to the large front luggage rack and is grounded to the car via an 8 ga. wire. It works well on band C, B and clear down to 25.615 MHz on band A. I don't necessarily recommend this type of antenna because I had difficulty getting it tuned properly (it was a grounding problem) and is designed to handle high power (up to 15,000 W) for things like competition key downs. I'll never run this kind of power thru it, but I just like the way it looks (and the stares I get from people on the street as I pass by with that monster on board). Picture a 1995 Ford Taurus wagon, mist green, with these two antennas and the regular radio antenna. Looks like a rolling satellite!

Thanks Harpoonman,

Throughout the entire band my swr's stay below a 1.5.I tried my Wilson Silverload but couldn't get the swr's below a 2.I still don't know what the problem is with my VR9000.I guess I'll just have to let it warm up a few minutes before trying to talk.Picture this;A Ford F-150 with one steel whip and two Wilson Truckers.(Talk about a lightning rod).
