I need a Tech's help please. Let me explain what I've done first..
First off, you know how sometimes you do stupid stuff without thinking. Well today, I found out what happens when stupid attacks. I bought a Galaxy DX-44v off a friend of mine. I hooked it up and was told that it sounded funny. I assumed it was overmodulating. I brought it home, hooked it up to my scope, and sure enough it was. I removed the covers and found that R249 had been clipped and the old 1N4001 diode had been added to R238. I removed the diode, and removed the clipped resistor. I replaced R249 with another new resistor. Here is where stupid attacked me. I turned off the unit, but I didn't unplug it. I first checked the radio after removing the diode, and all was well. After replacing R249 I then found that when I'd key up I had a carrier, but the radio won't modulate. If I remove the resistor, the radio swings like it should. What is wrong? I have checked to make sure there is no solder traced over to anything else that it shouldn't be touching. My solder joints are clean and aren't cold.
Could a Tech please help me? I don't know where to start, and I'd like to get the radio to work in the correct fashion without anything clipped or removed. I hate to think I bought a radio and ruined it because stupid attacked me today. |

DID YOU REPLACE THE RESISTOR WHICH WAS CLIPPED WITH THE SAME VALUE? |

Yes I did. At first I just soldered it back together. Then when it did that crazy stuff, I replaced it. I had the same problem. Might not have anything to do with leaving it plugged in, this might be something going on when I got it. But either way, we know it shouldn't be doing this... |

Did they remove the modulation limiter and solder a bridge across there? tr-24 I think it is,,you may check that. |

No, checked that just now. I don't know what is going on with this radio. I left R249 lifted and the radio works fine. It's odd that if I solder it back down that the radio quits working. It'll key up but nothing else. Odd. |

something is shorted in the amc chain (most likely a trans) and it is causing tr32 to stay turned on pulling all mic audio to gnd or either tr32 is bad itself |

Helllllllp, PLlllllllllllease.
I have a grant xl, yeaterday I found out that I have a good carrier, yet I have no Modulation, I don't see any thing out of place.
This grant has been peaked tweaked & "freqed", it also has a freq counter. I would take it to my tech but he is really busy with his f/t job.any ideas?????? |

check mic gain on radio, on mic, try another mic, did it stop modulating immediately after peak & tweak? wrong part could've been tweaked in effort to maximize audio. start looking at obvious. probably just a dumb mistake being overlooked. |

it was the very obvious. It was the power mic.
the battery was not making a good conection. Stupid me didn't check that untill later.
not the mods, they were done about five years ago. |
