I RECENTLY GOT THIS COBRA 139 XLR FROM ELDERLY NEIGHBOR . HASN,T BEEN PLUGGED UP IN ABOUT 15 YEARS . IT WORKS ON AM AND SSB . I WAS THINKING OF SHIPPING IT TO MY TECH FOR A GOOD TUNE AND EXTRA CHANNELS . DOES ANYONE THINK THIS WOULD BE A WAIST OF MONEY ON THIS OLD OF A RADIO ? I,M NOT FAMILAR WITH IT , BUT LOVE THE LOOKS .JUST DON,T WANT TO SINK A BUNCH OF MONEY IN IT IF IT ISN,T WORTH IT . ANY ADVICE APPRECIATED |

If it is cosmetically good and is basically stock and working then I would say yes, it would very much be worth having a REAL tech with REAL test equipment do some upgrades. Don't even think about sending it to anyone who doesn't have or know how to use a signal generator. |

i agree with highlander. i own two of these radios and they are my absolute favorites. these radios can be converted to go all the way from 26.005-27.995 and they will cover pretty much the whole range. ONLY send this radio to a PRO. if they dont have an O-scope, they arent qualified. whichever tech you choose should recomend that you have all of the am regulators replaced. the stock ones are junk. if you'd like an indication of how much use the radio has gotten, take off the top cover with the front facing you and look on the right hand side about half way back. you should see a big resistor with a piece of white teflon covering it. take off the teflon and see if there are any black marks on or around the resistor. most of the time, there is some burning and sometimes it is charcoal. if yours isnt burnt, youve got a gem. now take off the bottom cover, turn the radio upside down and look at the underside of the pll chip(upd858) are there any foil traces cut? any strange wires, diodes or resistors that dont look factory? if not youve got a REAL gem. these radios are capable of tremendous audio in the right hands. i think that the techs on here are the ones to trust. good find!
