we had an ice storm move through today and had the radio and amp on to see how the roads were.
And then all of a sudden there was a slight flash of lightning and some thunder and the pre amp was gone.
So shut it down unhooked evey thing to be safe, when the bad weather past hooked it back up every thing works but the pre amp.
Any ideas what it could be?

Not to be complaining but does anyone know anything about this amp?
I looked at the print on this but I don't understand what the #'s and the lines mean.
As stated the amp works fine just the pre amp is out I heard a slight *pop* and no pre amp.
Again Thank you and I don't want to be a pest or a pain in the butt.*ouch*
But anything would be great.

Does the preamp relay click? If so check TR8 (BF199)
If the relay does not click check TR1 and TR2 (BC547's)
Also while in there check R7, R8, and R1. Make sure they are not open.

This is what it does when the pre amp off the receive is good and when I turn pre amp on I have nothing?
When I tyr to talk on it I hear a click but I think it's the relay for SSB but I will try.

More than likely it is transistor T8, the pre-amp transistor. These transistors are used in all of the KL units and are very susceptable to falure from anything from static to high front-end overload. You can replace it with a 2n3904 but the pin-out will be different: BF199=CEB; 2n3904=ECB when looking at the transistors "face-on". |

I was hoping Inspector would chime in! I also believe the 2N3904 is a more robust device, HELPING to alleviate future problems. You never know with mother nature.
If it's dead with the switch on then the other transistors are working as they activate the relay, if they were dead you would just have no amplification or the preamp would be stuck "ON" |
