I have a 2950DX that I need to lower the dead key on. I have already adjusted VR15 in the radio to as low as it will go, and the lowest I can get it is to a 3 watt dead key.

Is there a way to get the dead key lower than 3 watts? I need it to dead key at about 1-1.5 watts.

I would also like to know if the is a 1n4001 diode (swing)mod that can be done with this radio, similar to the one on the EPT690010z boards and the 99v. The 1n4001 mod has worked so well with my 99v, I would like to use it on my 2950DX as well.

Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks,
RFIcon

Did you adjust VR19, the low power adjustment also? Turn the power knob fully clockwise and adjust VR15 for 8-10 watts. Then turn it fully counter clockwise and adjust VR19 for about 1 watt. Make sure you have the mic gain turned down all the way while doing this.

VR19 is the low power adjustment and you won't be able to bring the power down by adjusting VR15 alone. Sometimes it's hard to read the print on the board so click on "2950DX main PCB" on the link above if you have trouble. You might want to reset VR13 the driver bias if you have been turning that.

Here is a link to the full service manual. http://www.rangerusa.com/websupport.html#online
Scroll down until you see the proper one. Open it and look on page 19 and it will have the information you need.

Ok,

I guess I got my VR's mixed up.

I got the radio in front of me, and I never adjusted VR13(driver bias, back corner of the radio). I actually adjusted VR19. Where it is labeled "Low Power".

So, this brings me back to the original question.

I have adjusted VR19(low power) as far down as I can, and my dead key is at 3 watts. How can I lower the dead key further? I need it to be around 1-1.5 watts.

Thanks for the help,

RFIcon

P.S. Any info on a 1n4001 diode(swing) mod for this radio? It has the EPT695011A board in it.

While you have the power knob turned all the way down, see if the high power adjustment will let you lower the dead key down to where you want it. Then turn the power knob back up and see what your max dead key is. If high power is too then sometimes the low won't go down where you want it.

I can't help you on the swing mod. These radios seem to swing well on their own as long as you have the modulation turned up.

Vr15 is the AM low power adjustment. There is a Diode-resistor mod for the DX models, it is that you have to do your homework before you instal the mod...the PC board has none of the parts labled, so you have to studdy the parts layout in that PDF service manual. The NPC mod installs in the same place in the schematics as it does in the older 2950 scematics...just the parts are labled differently and are small SMT "chip" parts.

Check this out.

http://www.rangerusa.com/images/2950dxlo.gif

I have adjusted VR19 all the way down. So if I drop V15 down a little, and leave VR19 alone, I should be able to achieve a lower dead key? Am I understanding this correctly?

Thanks for everyones help.

In most cases, if the high setting for rf power is up too high, the low won't go as low as you want it to. Try it and find out, you can always put it back where it was.

Thanks guys!

I was able to lower the dead key down using VR15 (A/F power). I really appreciate all of the help that I received.

Now if I only knew the best dead key for a dx500v! Off to the amp section I go.

Thanks again for the help.
