I would say you need to open the clarifier so you will be able to stay in line with transmit and receive.

Should 1861 adjust vr7 without any equipment? did you get the FD1 new and is it under warrenty still? my FD1 was off frequency and not putting out correct watts on side band when I got it so I sent it back to Ranger and they fixed it up for free and it did not take them long. It`s been on frequency since, Give them a call or email them befor you open it and break the seal.

one more thing 1861, If you do the adjustment yourself then let the radio turned on for a while so it is at operating temp and stable befor you start, my FD1 stablelizes after about 20 min or so.

I don't the specifics of this radio, but if it's designed like a 148 the variable resistor won't correct the recieve frequency - just the transmit. There are three inductors you have to adjust on a 148 to get AM, USB, and LSB on frequency. The 148 also has a variable resistor to adjust transmit frequency, but that's all it adjusts.

if you open the clarifier you adjust transmit and receive together.from the factory you only clarify receive not transmit.this way you keep them both inline together
