if the receive & carrier are fine check the mic 1st. i used to love ripping those skinny little astatic 575m6 cords out of the end of the plug while mobiling.

Pat
that's what shrink wrap is for.
Put it 'round the cord there at the plug.
It works just like the factory stuff

cbc544,here's a little test you can do to determine whether or not the mic is the culprit.

unplug the mic from the radio. turn on the radio with a PA speaker connected. switch radio to PA mode. make sure the volume is not more than 1/4 way up. determine which pins on your mic plug (radio), are the ground, TX, and Audio pins. connect a wire from the ground pin to the TX pin. this should "key the mic", now connect a wire from the ground pin to the audio pin, leaving the connection between the ground and TX in place. this should have caused a loud squeal through the PA speaker that only lasted a second because its scared the bejeezuz out of you. if you hear the tone, the radio is working and the mic needs replacing. if you get no squeal, the problems are in the radio.
you mentioned having bad caps. that charged my memory and i think there is a repair mentioned in an old secret cb book about this. i'll look tonite when i get home. check back on monday.

I DID IT AGAIN. I SMOKED MY XL. No audio over am, ssb, or pa functions. I will be checking the caps listed above. I did notice on Sun. that she was not swinging much at all on ssb( about 3w total on ssb- me no likey). Right now when I key the mic the meter drops to 0 and that is all. Receive is good. But that is it.

Thanks sg569

OK,
Seeing as how Rat Shak only had 2 220uf/35v caps, I replaced c18 and c186. The p/a now works hopefully I can get the other two caps mon. morning. So far so good.

Thanks Sg569

up the value of C18. it helps when you are pushing a lot of audio through the radio.
i use 680uf.
i also changed out the big cap near the audio IC to a 3300uf 50 volt.
i think these make a big difference in loud punchy audio.
