Uniden pc78 elite driving a texas star modulator driving a xforce 400. Should I turn my radio down so that it keys 1 watt and swings to about 4, or should I do the swing mod and have it swing to 16. What are the pros and cons, how do I do the swing mod for uniden 78

the x400 you are talking about is the 1-2290 x 4-2879's, correct? THAT 1 will not need the texas star modulator as a driver. it will take no more then 3 watts dead key-the pc78 with or without the swing mod will be fine. vary the radio's output from 1 watt up to NO MORE then 3 watts-OR until the amps dead key reaches 250 watts. at that point, your swing could be anywhere from 600-1000 watts, depending on input swing, which should NOT exceed 35 watts.
if you're referring to the straight 4 x 2879 amp, you CAN use the texas star modulator to drive it. you have to vary radio wattage to get texas star to dead key 10 watts, & quickly check x force output, vary radio up til TS reaches no more then 20 watts, or x force dead keys 250 watts. with up to 200 watts swing input, the 4 pill x force should be about the same as the 5 pill, maybe some more swing, dead keys the same though.
my 5 pill davemade (of which the x400 is an exact copy) will dead key 250 watts with a hair under 3 watts from grant xl and S9, and swings 700 with the xl, about 1kw with S9. though not double the output (or 3db gain difference) the S9 has an increase in S-unit to receiving stations. S9's swing is double that of the xl.
