this is one that makes no sense to me but I'm no brian surgeon! This is what I have. pc68xl 102" steel whip mounted on toolbox maco minimite 2 the radio and antenna show a 1.2:1 ratio when they are the only thing in line. When I put the maco inline the swr shows above 3 and swings backward on ch20 1.2:1 when on 40 and no swing and stays in the red on ch1 I have the meter inline between the amp and antenna I havent tried between the radio and amp yet any ideas as to what i should look for Ground maybe I tested between the neg bat post and the outside of the connector at the antenna and it shows cont. I realy would like to get the reading down to 1.5 or less on all channels cause I no the lower the match the better the radio works and I dont want to burn up the radio I've put 2 much work in it but I would really like the amp inline for that extra punch I talked on it for a few minuts and it talked fine from the info I was getting from a freind about 10 miles out but I dont like the high reading it makes me nervous! any help would be welcome |

tell us the story of your coax.. how old is it? what kind is it? did you put the ends on yourself?
DO NOT CUT YOUR ANTENNA!!! if you are thinking that you might have to trim the 102" whip, then you've got other problems.
in my truck i have a 148gtl, connected to a three foot piece of RG8mini coax, to a kl300p, to a 12' (approx.) piece of RG8mini, to my 102" whip.
my swr is 1.3 to 1.5 on all channels.
replace each section of coax with a new piece and see if that changes anything. are you using the BIG spring with your 102" whip? you should be. its not just for bending, its designed to be part of the system. what kind of mount are you using?
how close to the cab of the truck is the antenna?
are you sure you can trust your swr meter? is it rated to handle the power that the amp is putting out? did you buy it new?
change out the coax, sand all ground points to bare metal, and keep the antenna at least a foot away from the cab. let us know how it goes.
BTW, my 102" whip is mounted on the truck bed tool box also. how well is your tool box grounded to the truck bed?

You should not see any differance in swr with the amp inline. I agree with kid. Try as he suggested and let us know. |
