Getting ready to beef up the lightning protection. I was wondering if the polyphaser can be kept outdoors or if it is an indoor only device. I prefer to keep mother nature as outside as possible. Any insight would be appreciated. Chad |

Chad, I would not recommend outside mounting. I would use Bulkhead or inside mounting like I show in the pictures I posted on my station equipment. APPLICATION: For general radio use; surface or bulkhead mountable options, NOT where transmitter combining is performed. Utilizes UL497B listed gas tube Models from 1.5MHz to 1000MHz Multi-strike capability Low strike throughput energy Flange mount and bulkhead mount options Not weather resistant Weatherize using WK-1 Aluminum enclosure 18-8 stainless steel hardware UHF nickel shell silver center, TFE N silver shell and gold center pin IS-B50LU-CO Throughput Energy: </=10mJ* (UHF connectors/Bulkhead) Frequency Range: 1.5MHz to 400MHz Max. Power: HF 2kW, VHF 375W, UHF 125W Hope this helps, Lon Tech808 CEF808 N9OSN

Bummer, then it goes inside, I I have seen the ramifications of a good strike, I just don't want a tiny hand grenade in my shop What is a WK1? Does anyone know anyone who has used one. I'll jump on their site now and try to find one. I guess another option is mounting it in a weather proof "timer box" or other utility box. Chad |

When I lucked up on some polyphasers last year, I read everything I could find on them including the very good writeups by 833 on this forum. I know people can read things different, but what I got was to keep the lightning outside. The polyphaser needs to be in a weatherproof encloser or weatherproofed itself. I mounted mine right at the bottom of the tower. The idea of the polyphaser is take the charge off the coax and take it to ground. If that ground is inside, where would it go next, maybe to your equipment. Anyway, that's my idea, but hey, i'm old and senile. I scanned the directions that were with my polyphasers if you care to read them, here they is. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v208/Familystuff/polyphaser001.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v208/Familystuff/polyphaser.jpg |

Hey Chad, you can mount them outdoors inside a box. I used an old sprinkler control box that is water tight, worked well, and hides all the coax where it comes into the house too. Rich |

I agree that it's best to keep lightning outside. If you have a grounded bulkhead where your coax comes into your building, then I'd mount them right there. I don't know why you couldn't mount them ouside as long as you can keep them dry. |

Thanks all!!!!!! The weatherproofing kit appears to protect the connections, soooooo looks like the assembly can be outside but connections must be kept water-tight. As of not the grounding is a barrel connector thru a bulkhead outside attached to the ground rod. the coax then comes inside with a 4Ga ground wire to a group of ground lugs. I would like to re-work the bulkhead and put the polyphaser there and retain (of course) the grounding system inside. So far this system has proven to be very effective, but, ya canna defy the laws of physics Or mother nature for that matter! |

If any one is interested thay can look at my installation as I have pictures posted here in the Ask The Tech Area in the Topic Titled: RADIO EQUIPMENT & GROUNDING. I asked Paul/Tech833 for his advice as he is a Licensed BE and controls several radio stations and followed his advice to the letter. Tech833 also helped me write the Review on the Poly Phasers also located here in the: Subscriber (Preview) area of the Copper Forum. No Problems what ever. Just my personal experience with Grounding and the Poly Phasers. Hope this helps, Lon Tech808 CEF808 N9OSN |
