I am working with a cheap groundplane ant. The main vert. element is above the roof line and but the horiz. elements are not. just found my old Hy Gain Penetrator 500 5/8 wave in my attic stored from the 70's.I am considering putting it up.Is it worth the work? First quest.I live on the top of the hill so I don't think that I need that high of a mast but what is the minumum I should keep the horizontal elements off of my shingle roof? Also when I run guy wires should I attach them to the mast just below the antenna mount and will the wires have any affect on the antenna? Do the guy wires need to be insulated at the conn. point of roof.I read on this forum about tuning this antenna by squeezing the wires at the base of the antenna Don't understand this.How is tuning done on this antenna? You can get the documentation for this antenna by going to CB Tricks and looking at the file for the antenna under the subject at the top of the page "Antenna Info."
I believe this antenna to be fixed tuned for 11 meters and do not know what squeezing the wires will do. This is not discussed in the docs, so I would question that information. |

Thanks Marconi for the reply I will probably be looking at a 20-50 mile range and occasionlly trying skip just for the heck of it. |

Alot Antennas work good at 9 feet above
roof and away from other objects.
As for guy wires, do a search for Dacron
antenna rope. These won't interfere with
your antenna.

Johnny Be Good, The wires you mentioned are for tuning the ant.Get the meaesurements correct for the verticles and the horizontal elements and use the wire on the base for tuning. By squeezing the wire you will be changing the impedance of the ant, thus the freq range. A ham op friend of mine has a brother who used the same ant for 10 meters. The wire was spread apart. We had to squeeze them together to get it to tune on 11 meters.
You haave a very good ant there. I would put it up and play it. The only thing I don't like about the Penatrator is that it is very narrow banded and the power capacity is like 500w. Outside of that, it's an excellent ant.
