I am going to make a inverted v antenna for a back-up I have read so much about them that they peaked my interested. Just have to try building something to see if it works. O-well I quess I am hook now. But I'm not sure about Baluns are they just adj. tuning coils the same as a ant. matcher? Are chokes mainly used for tvi ? don't no the diff. I have another post about my penetrator ant.I am going to install an needed to know if I need to do the coiled coax. 6-8 turns on 6-8 dia.at conn. point of antenna at the mast is this a balun or choke and do I need it if I can get a good swr without it? Thanks John |

a simple but efective baulm is to coil coax right at the feed point i found it works very well and is DIRT CHEEP.... |

Baluns match the ohms of the antenna up with the radio. For CB you can use regular coax. I had great success with the rg8x coax. About 8 turns of coax around a coke can ought to be just about right to choke rf from travelling back down the shielding of the coax.
Wire antennas are fun and easy to build. For greater gain, but this is more directional, build a loop. You can use about 37 feet of 14 G. insulated electrical wire amd string it over a high tree limb and work the wires into as much of a circle as possible (you could build a lightwweight frame). Use 75 ohm cable for a better match and solder the center lead to one side of the wire and the shield to the other lose wire. This is a loop antenna and it can surprise what it can do.

Told a friend about this post, and he wants to know if making one of these baluns will work in a mobile. He's having a little swr trouble in trying to get it down on a stargunn antenna. And do you just coil your coax that comes from the radio, or do you have to use a double female connector to join the balun to your coax coming from your radio. |

spiderleggs, your friend does not need a balun. he needs to tune his antenna and make sure it is grounded properly. if it still wont work, buy a new antenna, not a balun. |
