I can't find any product reviews or discussions on these two (V-Quad or Y-Quad) antennas,

Anybody here ever use one, either, both?

I have personally used both of these
Antennas in the past. Didn't care for
either on of them, so, they were not
up long as i went back to Omni Antennas.
Maco 3 elements or more work good in my
opinion. You will see more noticeable
difference over the Omni Antennas.

To the left under Utilities click on
search and type in Y Quad beam.
Some posts will come up.

I couldn't find anything substantive there, just "mention" of the name.

Thanks

What gets me about the V quad, is it is not exactly verticle, not exactly horizontal, it is like a tweener, you are not getting the best of either. I would suggest a true verticle or horizontal, keeping in mind on the flat side, you shoot over a lot of mobiles, and locals. 198 is about 20 miles from me, and when he goes on the flat side, I can barely hear him transmit, as opposed to 5 or 6 lbs verticle.

Pig:

Is your reception of CEF-198 based upon a Quad V or a Vertical on your end?

I have similar problems with SSB reception of anybody vertical, at less than 40 miles now, and I am using a Skylab.

i have a imax 2000 and a y quad run into a dosy antenna switch that allows me to run vert, horiz, vert&horiz,or aux antennas..the imax is a great antenna, i find that i can hear a little further and transmit a little further than the old a99 i use to have..with the beam i use flat to talk DX or to other local guys who have flatsides for a base, when the mobiles are keying down hard,so i dont have to run high power..and when mobiles and bases are in the same general area ill use the vertical side..

however i was suprised as to how good rejection not only that the back has but the sides as well..i think the y quad(for a small affordable beam) is a good choice if your not wanting to always run lots of power..

so i guess im trying to say that if everyone you are going to talk to are going to be in the same direction,id go with the beam..if they are in multiple directions id use an omni..

Do you find the quad limiting power, or did I misunderstand that. I have a KLV-350, but seldome use it.

had the y-quad back in the 70's crackerjack. it outperformed my omni at the time, a shakespeare big stick. used it with a yaesu ft101e & maco 800 amp. also used it with a pace 1000m & johnson 4740 (both modded). when it came down in a storm i rebuilt it as a 3 element-almost the next day i saw the 'comet' in wilson's ads(they weren't maco beams back then, but wilson). i liked the performance of the 3 element better then 2.
maybe early 80's put up v-quad with a friend. he HATED it. bought a 2nd & stacked 'em. when they came down in a storm he replaced 'em with a pdlII & couldn't have been happier. same or better performance & the pdl was tons SMALLER!

Crackerjack

I have used the y-quad and loved it till i found a bigger beam !!
the only thing i did was get a co-phased harness for a set of duel antennas and had no problem with local or DX !!
but it was a pain in the butt to get things tuned it so the SWR was to the 1.5-1.9 all across the band . (1-40)

and you can use a small TV rotor to to turn it so it make its more of a deal for its price !!!
60 bucks for the tv rotor
146.99 y-quad beam
206.99 mius shipping and you cant find a good ham 4 rotor that cheep !!!

but its your money and its you idea of what you want !!

i hope i could help !!!!

Gator: I don't understand what you were doing with the co-phase harness?

no,i run 1500watts in either antennas...but you can run lower power in the beam and get the same results or better than running a omni and higherpower..

I mean running the beam on verticle as opposed to horizontal.

the harness was for running horz and vert at the same time !!
it can be done and it works great ! but its a pain in the butt to adjust both gamas at the same time to get a 1.1 match !

P.S. it did do some real strange things to the florsent bulbs in the garage with the beam hooked to the same ground wire as the lightning rods on the garage !!!!
