i no this was talked about before, but just now looking into the buying of one of these!! probley the 4+, as i like the little added benifits of the longer mast!! can any of youall give me the pros and cons of this antenna, and some of the quirks i should look for to take care of before its 75 feet in the air?? all info appreaciated, thanks |

WELCOME TO THE COPPER FORUM!
Yes, I have the Quad 4 and it is the Best antenna I have ever used.
The Plus 4 is really not needed.

I recently installed a S.E. White Lightning
here. Mine has the 15ft boom.
Antenna works great!
I painted the fiberglass spreader arms white
so they will hold up to the weather for
a long time.

I was going to answer your e-mail but I can do it here for you.
#1 ~ Count and double check all parts on arrival and make sure you have everything.
#2 ~ I spray painted all nuts, bolts, washers & screws RED in case we dropped them since they are so small they would be easy to find.
#3 ~ Have at least 1 other person to help with assembly of both sections of antenna.
#4 ~ Find a good Flat area for assembly, we used the concrete car port.
#5 ~ I lightly sanded all spreaders and painted them with white fiberglass auto paint prior to final assembly to help them last longer per Tech833's very helpful advice.
#6 - Then I pre-drilled very small holes into the fiberglass spreaders after I had the wire attached and streched out on the spreaders to allow the screws to go in easier on the spreader elements.
#7 ~ The first Sargant and I assembled 1/2 at a time and set them on the spreader ends until we were ready for final assembly.
#8 ~ We used RED Locktite on all nuts & bolts.
#9 ~ We then cut and ran 2 runs of RG-213 to the length we needed and already had them ran inside of the house to the equipment / switch box going to the radios.
#10 ~ We invited about 4 others over on mounting day to help and had about 6 show up. When everyone showed up we mounted both sections to the Boom of the antenna.  .
Note! Not required but Very Helpfull
#11 ~ Prior to raising the antenna we ran 2" mast pipe with a 10' Reinforced section out the the top section of the tower 56' down thru the tower with Thrust bearings at 40' and 20'.
This allowed us to mount the rotor at roof top level and also allows us to have NO WEIGHT on the Rotor and to remove the rotor without having to climb to the top should anything go wrong with the rotor.
And it also allows us to remove the rotor and drop the Antenna mast pipe to rest the antenna boom flat on the top section of the tower should we have any problems with the antenna or need to work on it and makes it very easy to mount the antenna and THEN raise the antenna to height from the ground after it is mounted.
#12 ~ We used a fiberglass step ladder mounted in the back of a pickup truck for final assembley and mounting of the coax. and pre-set the SWR.
BE SURE to DRESS/SEAL your coax very well after mounting it to the antenna per instructions.
#13 ~ After the Antenna was assembled we then drove across the street and handed it to them on the roof and they raised it up to the roof then climbed and mounted the antenna to the mast pipe and we made final adjustments for the SWR.
#14 ~ We also used 2 HT's when raisng the antenna to the top and mounting it so we could talk to the top tower person for final SWR Settings after it was in the air.
#15 ~ Total time after the antenna was completely assembled on the ground to the time it was mounted on the mast pipe was less than 30 minutes with climbing 56' tower, mounting, and final SWR Adjustments.
#16 ~ Total time for final assembly of the 2 sections of the SE Quad 4 was less than 2 hours for the 1st Sarganrt and I.
#17 ~ GOOD LUCK and you will LOVE it!
#18 ~ Then you will be ready to Join the CEF Radio Club and give it a good workout.

Follow Lons advice and you have it made.
I used his ideas to assemble mine.
Except i tried to put mine together in
the grass, big mistake..LOL.. and i didn't
paint my screws, another mistake i made.
Its worth it to follow his advice.

I had very poor luck with there antennas. I thought the directions were terrible and no help from them on the landline. It allmost seemed the Horz feed and vertical feed was wrong and cancelled each other someway. Never could get right even with help from other net members in my area. I dont think it would of lasted in our high wind winter months anyway. Bought a Maco 4 element and very happy with gain and rejection and it wont blow down in our winds. Just my 2 cents worth Good Luck !! |

Hi there Chainsawiowa
Iv seen tech 808 quad 4 with over a inch of ice on it and its still up there. and I often talk to him on ground wave, and yes im in Iowa also.
Also chainsawiowa i have a brand new maco5 Iv bought from COPPER going up soon!
When i get it put up i will let you know!
Like to have a qso with you sometime, Im around the Ottumwa Iowa area.
The Signal Engineering Quad 4 is a good antenna Iv sent good reports to the operators that have them.

High Wind?
Ours survived 80+ MPH Winds, when it took our Rohn 40' Push up with 6 guy wires and Imax down the SE's SURVIVED!
Winter Months?
Major Ice Storm! and when the thaw came they bounced back just like new.

Moderator136 Hi Chainsawiowa here, Im up here in Des Moines We have a Mid Iowa net on 27.365 LSB on Sunday and Wednesday nights at 8 PM, You can give us a holler you might have to try to talk to Clarence in Knoxville and relay tho. Also we have a Two Rivers Net on Wednesday and Saturday Night at 8 pm on 27.395 LSB also listen and join in if you can hear us thanks !! |
