Dosy Meters (some) have a phone jack for monitoring signal modulation.
1. Do they work?
2. Had I one, could I monitor microphone adjustments for proper/max/over driving and squeal, stuff like that?
In the military, we used a receiver and a spectrum analyser to accomplish max/proper adjustments off-the-air.
If you have a monitor method -please "weigh in". |

A radio on the same channel.
The 'headphone' tap-off is better than nothing, but won't sound the same as a receiver tuned to the same signal.
The headphone-jack trick is better than nothing, but you'll find that when you turn down your AM carrier, the modulation volume falls off.
Listen to the same radio/amp on another receiver, and you'll hear the mike gain 'appear' to come UP as the carrier is turned DOWN.
Discovering that little flaw was enough to convince me that I wasn't going to hear the same thing on the headphone jack that they'll be hearing "out there".
Like I said, better than nothing, but not ideal.

I was thinking that this would be a good idea, aa cheap radio with a dummy load for an antenna should work, wouldn't you think?
That would give me AM reception but not SSB, as I don't think I want to buy another SSB radio for test equipment. Although it would be cheaper than a spectrum analyser. LOL...
I am thinking that AM reception is good enough? Or does that constitute the same result as using the meter phones? |

I got a used xl-510 and put a little screw on dummy load on it, and earphones.
I turned the Magnum 257 RF powrr all the way down -it worked like a champ.
I set the desk mic levels off channel that way -then went on the air and got glowing reports.
