So uh, has it always been like this for as long as you've had it?

Or did it receive just fine and then quit? Maybe when you pulled up alongside somebody's BandSmasher 5000 when it was keyed up? If the radio was turned off when this happened, the damage can still occur this way.

There are, in fact a couple of specific "PIN" type diodes in the receiver, where the antenna circuit feeds into it. If your problem was created by a severe overload, or a surge from a nearby lightning stroke, these diodes can be damaged.

They almost never just "fail" on their own, without some external cause.

If the radio is used as a base, leaving the antenna connected during a storm could cause problems, even if a lightning stroke hits a tree across the street. Doesn't have to strike your antenna to cause a surge. Just something nearby.

Well I have parked near to a base station, by near I do mean 150-250 yards away. But for the most part the recieve has been quiet since I got it about 8 years ago, just recently it has gotten really bad.

Yes Bruce I did get your e-mail. Would that diode mod have come from the Grant Xl Owners Group site? if so I might have a copy of it as I printed out the mods from there.

Thanks sg569

I have 2 grant xl radio's, on one of them I can set the am power from 0 to 4 watts out, the 2nd radio the lowest i can get the am power is 4 watts and top it out at 15 watts. I am trying to set these radios up to run with amps but have been told that the dk should not be over 2 watts to the amp. have you ever heard of 2 of the same radios working like this and is there anything that can be done to lower the am power
