Well a buddy of mine who knew I was seeking another SSB mobile radio for my Jeep has been keeping his eyes peeled. He had to stop at a local TV repair shop to pick something up and spotted a little Uniden SSB. Called me at home to ask if I was interested for $25...I said $25? If it works I'll take it.
When he brought it over I saw why it was $25. A little beat up and scuffed but fully operational..in fact a switch on the side operates the now self verified +/- 40 freqs and has had the clairfier opened up with a super slider.  Radio is a President AX-144.I repainted the case to match my Lollipop D104 and polished the face up NICE and sprayed the board with electronic cleaner. The RF meter was sticky so I replaced it with a brand new one from the local CB shop for $9. Looks and operates GREAT!
Now to the watt meter...DK 7 swing to 18 and swings to 30 on SSB
I noticed a 2w DK and swing jump when switching above or below the reg 40freqs? Hmmmm?
Anyway..they are still out there boys! Keep yer eyes peeled!
All the money I saved could go toward warming up my feet

i never should have taken my Ax144 to a TV repair shop to get fixed. ive not seen it since.

Is that a Uniden AR-144 or did they also make a AX-144? What is the PLL? maybe uPD-858 or MB 8719. They look simular to the first Grant with the uPD-858 PLL. |

It is indeed an AX-144. Same PLL as the AP or PC244. Not a very common one from my investigation. UPD2824 ring any bells with you?
Not easy finding Cap/Res mods for this rig. A little noisy on the RX. Has a nice transmit from what I hear on the other end.
Would like to find a simple block diagram for it. I looked up the Copper mods and took care of that but would love to adjust things to my taste.

I know nothing of the uPD-2824, this might be one of the tuff to convert PLLs. |

The uPD2824/D2824 was used in the: Cobra 146 GTL, Realistic TRC-453, Uniden AR-144, Uniden PC-122 & AR-144 P300, Uniden Pro -640e & 810e Base radios as well as Many other radios.
Throw the uPD2824/D2824 away as it is Non-Modifiable and relpace it with a uPD2816 or add an Expo160 kit.

Thanks Lon...already has expander.
Just got done firin' out a little skip with it.
Barefoot on my RMS read MJF tuner I'm around 15w forward when "switched" and banging my own needle off the back wall.
Why would I gain Watts when off the standard 40 into freeband?
I watch the meter jump a few when I throw the switch? NOT complaining mind you...

Sorry I got back to this thread so late! I have an MJF-941E. Its not listed as a peak reading meter (reading forward) but mirrors a buddies Dosy peak reader. To be honest I only use the tuning capabilities when I go far beyond the standard 40. Even then I only have no more than 1.5 SWR. I only tune it because I can
This meter allows up to 3 antennas (2 SO239's and 2 terminals for twin lead). Tuner has built in Balun as well. I'm not currently using it to the best of its abilities but give me time
Oh yea..as a side note it'll handle up to 300watt input.
