I have the chance to buy one of these used in good condition. I know some like but can I get some opinions on this radio. I have been looking for one for a while for my collection. |

Hotwire this is the radio i use ......as a stock CB it's the best leagal set out there. |

Yes, by all means grab it, very much the same radio as the older Cobra 148 GTL, 148F-GTL, 2000-GTL and the Uniden Grant XL. You'll like it. |

Cool, I knew the people here had good things to say about it. I have been wanting one since all the good things I have heard. I'll let everyone know how it turns out. |

They are well made and with a few mods are as good as you will ever need.
1) Receive mod change 2sc1674 RF stage to 2sc2999
2) Add 7.8 mhz channel guard not needed but a nice touch.
3) Like lincoln and 2950 some people have changed diodes in noise blanker and AM detector
4) Swap out the SSB detector another nice touch.
My grant will give my ft-840 a run receiver wise
and is very stable. Just a great radio.

Bruce has hit the nail on the head with a very large hammer. Both Bruce and I can't say enough about these excellent radios. I just the other evening did the 2SC2999 receive RF section mod. and it made a great difference. Really like my Grant XL. |

Great radio. I picked one up on ebay, brand new in the box for $110. I also saw a few for sale at a local electronics store, they were going for $200! |

PBGRK5 .... Good choice.
The grant is not a fancy radio but it does what it was intended to do it works VERY WELL. If you want a 40 ch leagal SSB CB radio it is VERY hard to beat.
The other radio that is a classic is a chipswitch Lincoln but be prepaired to spend some money. Both radios changing that 2sc1674 rf stage works wonders on week signals and a ch guard will kill much of the splater.
Both will just SIT on frequency my grant is on from 10 am to 4 pm and never gets touched. |

There is also another model Grant my friend mentioned he will bring with him. I think it is LX or LT. I'm confused on which is which. Is there 2 models? If so what are the differences? |

there is a xl and lt radio and they are slightly diffrent but most mods work on both. |

There were three models of the Uniden Grant type accepted radios. The first model with the UPd 858 PLL. then the two newer ones the XL and the LT. I own an XL and the only two things I see different on the LT are the back lighted controls and the clarifier control is on a seperate little PC board, other than those two changes the XL and the LT are the same radio, the main PC boards are the same. Like California and Florida oranges, both being oranges. |

There's also a Uniden Grant(1005002). It's the first Uniden Grant. It looks like the President Grants with the two rows of knobs on the left side and the big channel knob on the right side.
The 858 Grants were President Grants which were made by Uniden, but not sold by Uniden. |

Im aware there are other grants but most were close enough in design that most mods work. Since most radios of the GRANT line are XL/LT's this is what we are talking about.

Agreed! I was just commenting on Yankee's history because he missed the 1005002 chassis which was the later President Grant and the first Uniden Grant.
The MB8719 Grants are all basically the same radio. In fact, Lou Franklin's updated Sams index lists the same issue for the President Grant (Late), Uniden Grant (1005002), Grant XL, and Grant LT. His installation instructions for the 7.8MHz Channel Guard are also identical for all of those models.
I own a Uniden Grant 1005002 that I bought in the early 90's. Great radio. |

Might know I'd miss one of the Grants, sorry guys. and now memory strikes me that I've seen the model Hollowpoint speaks of. So there has been 5 models and two were President, 3 Uniden correct. Am I right that the later President and the first Uniden were the same radio, just the name change over happened. Hope I can live long enough to see Uniden come back with a sideband radio from the Philippines again. |

I think so Yankee. They're referred to by the same chassis number of 1005002.
It's similar to the Washington history. The same MB8719 Washington was first a President and then later a Uniden. |
