Pat and BC will love this one...
First off I have been a big Galaxy fan since I can remember messing with radios. I don't know why, but I've always loved these radios. I had a 93T...didn't get what I expected from it, although it was a very nice looking radio. So I sold it, kinda sad at first, then I thought to myself "whew, what a relief". Well dag-on it, I've went and got another Galaxy headache. A 48T. When I got this radio it had a super mod in it. Why would anyone put one of these in this radio? I took it out. Well still not happy with it. I set it up like the sheet on the "tricks" site says to do. Still not happy with it.
How about you 48T owners tell me about yours and how yours works and acts. I undoubtably have a ground problem in my truck, cause I get a lot of feedback into my stereo system when I run this radio or any other radio with an amp. My biggest problem is I can't get the radio to swing 50 watts average power period. I get the 200 watts PEP, but not average. Up to a point I get forward swing. Then once I get the dead key so high, I see the needle actually swing backwards when I speak into the mic. Not on PEP or modulation, just when viewing the average power reading. It could be my meter, but I don't know, I've seen that happen before with another radio. I retuned that radio and fixed that. I can't figure out how to properly tune this radio though.
Any good mods for this radio and help would be great guys. |

Hey Porkchop, I too have loved Galaxies for years and years and years! Then I SAW THE LIGHT and I WAS SAVED!!! HALHELUJAH <---(believe me I had to spell check that one!)
Any way Sorry I can't help ya, but it DEFINATELY should be working better than that, Galaxy or not!!!

?? Where's my S9's?
Which brings up another question. S9 or S6 and what's the difference between the two? I know you and Pat can tell me that much. |

The S6 is the same thing, only AM only.

you can probably find 25 places i've posted my findings on coax & mobiles. bluntly put, base or mobile-USE THE ABSOLUTE BEST, HIGHEST % SHIELDED COAX YOU CAN GET. IF YOU CAN'T AFFORD IT, SAVE UP TIL YOU CAN GET IT!!!! several hundred watts doesn't interfere with stereo in my mobile, at 900 watts i can here myself START to come throught the speakers!
as for your 48t, porkchop, that's the 1st problem . seriously, it has 2-2290 transistors & should swing around 160 watts pep, while dead keying 50-60. while on the avg or rms scale, it should dead key in the 50 range & swing at least to 75. these figures depend on lots of variables.
if you wouldn't mind, start from the top. what kind of meter are you using?
i assume it has PEP or peak reading switch, so in that mode, with NO audio, what does it dead key? i assume this is where it swings 200(inaccurately).
then, in the avg or rms mode, with no audio, what does it dead key? now what does it swing?
lastly, radio is in AM mode, not FM, correct(FM should see no meter movement in rms or pep).

My Galaxy used to swing about a quarter of a what on FM, I never understod that. Got an idea?

it has to do with something like the process of varying an RF carrier's frequency as opposed to amplitude to add the 'voice' signal to the rf. whatever the heck that may mean! i'm an AMer who talks some SSB, my radios have FM only because...they do.
BUT, bc, we ARE in the right place, if somebody hasn't already beaten me to it, the correct explanation will appear shortly! i'm sure of it! |

Well, first off my meter stinks. It does have AVG and PEP. I should have said that I am running it higher than 13.8 volts. Maybe that is where I am seeing the extra PEP watts, usually I see this when I crank up the juice to the radio. I've cranked it up as high as 16 volts without any problems.
I will have to say I haven't had the drift or cold solder joint problem with any Galaxy I've owned yet. I love my 77, it's been my favorite so far.
However, I am looking to buy another radio. I've been thinking about the S9.
The 48T is pretty close to the specs you listed, slightly higher when I crank up the power to it. My 77 will dead key around 7 or 8 watts on the MED setting swing to 45 or 50 watts PEP running at around 16 volts. I do have a set of matched finals and noticed that when I changed them the power output did go up. Just my experience though, and my crappy meters. |

read my reply to your post on the other thread therealporkchop. wasn't sure if you were serious or not. guess you are! there is an argument for 95t galaxy vs S9, i'm not buying into it, though. i see NO argument for buying a 48t or 99v or any other galaxy for that matter vs an S9.
if all you want is watts, then sure the 95t is the choice over the S9. there is nothing that a # of us here can say to otherwise say 'galaxy over S9'. yeah, it's pricey, & wattage is less then some, & it's tricky to match an amplifier to, & EVERY BRAND OF CB/EXPORT has some sort of quality control issue, you're taking a chance buying a $300 cb as well as a $35000 car, but the magnum radios, S9 in particular, just have so much more in the way of useable & functional features. |
