Howdy...wondering if anyone here has a clue with this problem..
After about 10-15min of modulating on and off the TR51 (2SB754) gets hot and shuts down the carrier. If I allow it to cool a few minutes I'm ok till it heats up again then she starts cutting up and falling off again. I checked and resoldered the 3 pins on this "final"(Transistor?), unscrewed it, pulled it away from the side of the chassis and applied heat soak compound..still does it. Tightened all screws /grounds to chasssis. The radio is new and bought it "peaked / tuned". Radio does not seem to be over driven but has had the mod limiter clipped as per the seller. Any ideas here? I'm fairly knowledgable but won't go too far in troubleshooting something I've never encountered before.
Please...any and all suggestions would be great~!

Alllrighty then....how about the mod limiter? Anyone know the location or number? I don't think the Copper "mods" pertains to my rig...anyone? If I can find it I wanna put it BACK!

Ok..I dropped it at a local tech and he replaced two voltage regs..and replaced the heat sink behind it with mica instead of the ceramic type that was there to begin with. Seems ok to him now...we'll see. He said it gets warm but not the "fry an egg" I was having.
He also says he usually gets a 10wDK and swing to 40+ on this rig but can't see why mine won't get over 15PEP with a stock mic? He's still on the job and I trust him...he's done a LOT for myself and local friends..is concerned whatever is causing the lack of power may cook another Voltage reg...anyone have an idea on this one? Doesn't seem to be a lot of interest OR info on this radio...ANYWHERE~! Thinking I made a BIG mistake on this radio in particular.

Well got the call today..ended up with 2 new 1969 finals and he said it tuned right up. I'm guessing it may have had one bad final to begin with. Either way (and $60 later ) I'll have my radio back..16DK swing to 45.
Now I'll look to sell it and buy that Mag257 or TR296.....Sheesh!

The radio may not be a lemon,the final bias may have been set wrong and drew to much current from regulator,replacing finals is S.O.P. to have a baseline to work from,now you have a very good reliable radio with many years of use left,enjoy it,trick it out if you like.Heck where I live it's 60$ just to peak and tune,anything.Count your blessings and enjoy your radio.Bigbob |

I wasn't complaining too much just stinks to buy a radio "new" then fixing it within the first month. Although it was new it was also an "Auction" item..so no warranty applied. I got it for $128 so that with the repair bill adds up to what I could have spent on a better radio.
Well since that time its been all thumbs up and NO heat up problems. Coupled with the D-104 T-UG she's swinging an easy 45 from a 10DK. Happy at last.
(For what its worth I still like my Grant XL better..)
