whats the output difference between these two?too my understanding the 95t has two 2sc2290 finals/transisters. and the 2970 has a built in amplyflier . whats the difference in output both rms and pep?does one have an advantage over the other?does that 6th digit cure/help the famous galaxy drift that the older models have?i thought the galaxy, rci radios had 2sc1969 finals in them?

Same breed of radio. Both have built in amps. I like my 95t alot. It will talk over my locals 2970 anytime I want to. You will have drift with ANY export you use. Some are just less than others. My 95T has very minimal drift on ssb but I attribute that to a good alignment out of the box. My neighbors 2970 also has very minimal drift and sounds very good on SSB. Either way you cant go wrong but if I were buying again I would go Galaxy again

i do believe it was that big fan of galaxy's, mikefromms, who said his 95t sure can't hear like his magnum!that right there would make me pay $320 for an S9 rather then take a 95t for free! ok so i'd take the 95t but I'D SELL IT! & buy another S9. 150 watts is closer to driver then amp for my purposes. & while i CAN & WILL spend whatever it takes to get the S9 matched (& it does work just fine with my davemade) you are not going to do much about the poor receive of the galaxy. OTHER THEN BUY AN S9!!!

you're right, iluvrf, the S9 is NOT in the same category as the 2970 & 95t. it's a couple steps UP! i could put my tristar 120 up against both radios & SMOKE 'EM both! if wattage is the only concern. davemade, dx1600, got plenty of ammo to take care of 150 watt radios!I WANNA HEAR! i can always add watts.

now a dose of reality...i agree that some do not require what others do. & $$ comes into play often. that even goes for me. wanting badly to get on 6 meters after getting my ticket, i decided upon an icom ic706mkIIg. coming to the realization that it would be a while before i saved enough for 1, i got a great deal on a brand new unopened rci5054dx100. yeah, far from my 1st choice for a radio but...
listened to 6 on an early 706 today. YIKES! i WANT a new 706 NOW! see mikefromms, i CAN & DO feel your pain! i could hear things on the 706 in a mobile with a 1/4 wave whip that had NO signal on my rci with an antenna up 35' higher then the mobile!

that said, phooey on galaxy & rci. yes it's time S9S9S9S9S9S9S9S9S9S9S9S9S9S9S9S9S9S9S9S9S9

Both my 95T and my S-9 have had a good alignment. You can NOT tell the difference in RX between the two radios. Infact both radios are better than .2uv You arent going to get any better than that with an export.

Comparing apples and oranges?
Sure!
That is exactly it.
A BMW is a VERY fine car, along with bently, Mercedes, and the like none of which imports any trucks to the US. And Chevy, Ford and Doge make a fine truck! But as far as workmanship, care and technology the BMW, Mercedes, and Bently beat the american makers hands down! Now immagine that you could get a Bently made 1 ton crew cab truck made by them and to their standards, wouldn't that be great? Well the S9 is the Bently and the Galaxy is the Chevy, and to complete my annalogy, if you buy a 150 watt amp, BAMMMM now you have that Bently truck!
did I make sense? I think so

there's a ham forum/website/review site that had a bunch of comparisons maybe 4 or 5 years ago of pseudo-10m rigs. they involved galaxy, rci, delta force & something else. the delta was the clear winner & the galaxy the clear loser. it took in the range of .2uv to move the meter on the delta & NEARLY 1(ONE!) uv on the galaxy in SSB. they also tested FM. they were all untouched from the box only. they did hammer the early delta for it's front end overload problem but said it was the only 1 of the bunch that was even remotely 'likeable', by amateur standards.
don't remember exactly what 808 said the deal with HP S9 was, but i believe the next version was going to have the backlit knobs, & whatever the HP version would be, it would be 1 x 2290 or something? don't quote me on that, in case my memory failed. that however is just another 'problem' radio. too many people smoking their amps. a 2x 2290 type, such as the 95t would be a better option-it could drive 8 pills with no problem.
actually, mike, i worship the DX gods. wherever & whatever it takes to 'get out'. my S9 is only my 3rd most used radio-but that's because my XL in the mobile is set 'just right' & my ic735 at the base hears even better then the S9 on SSB. my AR3500 100 watt with ALL the options cost $600 in 1988 or whenever it was. i still think it is the ALL TIME BEST cb ever made. the ONLY thing the S9 needs to rival the 3500 is a built in 100 watts! & i'd consider paying quite a ransom for it! but when things are DEAD SILENT & i'm working in the shack, i'll listen to the S9 because it's SO QUIET & IT HEARS EVERYTHING! THAT IS AS IMPRESSIVE AS ITS XMIT!!!

WHY WOULD ANYONE WANT TO DESTROY A PERFECTLY GOOD RADIO BY OPENING IT UP AND TURNING THE KNOBS WHEN THEY ARE ADJUSTED AT THE FACTORY FOR THEY'RE NEAR PERFECT SETTINGS(MOD,HARMONICS,ETC)?
YA'LL DO REALIZE THAT THE BEST SOUNDING RADIO HAS 1/3 THE WATTAGE IN IT'S MODULATION? I.E.(10 WATT DEAD KEY AND A SWING TO 15 WATTS, 2.5 WATTS IN EACH SIDEBAND OF MODULATION.

yeah, maybe, Iluvrf. they're the same out of the box too-they show which manufacturers put more 'love' into their product. my ar3500 was opened to be modded to 11-nothing else needed to be OR ever was touched, til it broke...the S9 was supposed to be like that too, but some didn't respond output-wise til they were opened. it's rcv is AWESOME out of the box. have NO clue what the receiver responds to, but, like i said, it's not that far from my ic735 on SSB & probably a bit better on AM due to less noise. it IS better then my XL & too close to call with the 3500. like couchpotatoe said, it $#@&$ to have to align a radio out of the box, & i just don't see them really being all that far off. but, don't argue the point 'cause i really don't know. i just know how they 'compare' to what i have available. and i KNOW most on this forum & most all around DO NOT take a brand new radio to be aligned. some just have to do it, but most don't.the actual design of the rcv section of galaxy IS different then that of the XL, & i suppose the S9 & 3500 too, & i believe AM is not that great at all. but, hey, i still will NOT buy a galaxy-stubborness if anybody wants to call it that, but i AM MORE THAN SATISFIED with the rcv & xmit of my 735, S9, 3500, & XL-the radios i use regularly.

Very few radios are aligned well from the factory. Doing a full alignment generally makes a marked improvement on both transmit and receive.

2.5 watts of MODULATION in sideband? Hmmmmmmm Sideband is all mod with no carrier meaning I would have a 2.5W radio, no thanks!

Chad - What he meant was an AM signal with a carrier of 10 watts RMS shows 15 watts RMS at 100% modulation. The additional 5 watts of power is modulation and is equally distributed in each sideband of the AM signal which gives 2.5 watts RMS per sideband.

The 95T still wins because of the big face needle meter. I don't believe the 2970 can be nearly as loud as the Galaxy. How could anything be that loud? Wow! Now, if only the 95T had memory channels and scan....

If the magnum's receive is too sensitive, you can just turn down the RF gain just like on...Oh I forgot the 95t doesn't have an RF gain.

My experience with my properly aligned S9 is that it not only receives better than the majority of mobiles on the market today, but it is also quieter in the noise department, so I cannot understand what you mean by : "and pick up everything the magnums recive is way to
sensitive for me"

Picking up distant stations is a desirable quality in a radio. Producing a high noise floor isn't, and the S9 does the former but not the latter.

Jon666: How about some real dialogue here instead of little snippets that are thrown about.

I love my 95t except for no rf gain. Since I'm using it as a base, I can live without it. My I-10k antenna is very quiet so i don't mind keeping the ears wide open. The receive is as good as any radio I have ever owned. The drift is really bad if you are looking at the counter but you probably won't notice it otherwise.

Freebird, the missing channels are there. You have to use the 10kc switch.

Well, if you do ever decide that you need an RF Gain, you might try this. I haven't tried it and haven't verified that it works, but here is what I found:
-----------------
RF Gain Mod: Locate R72 just behind L5 (first receive coil, the one without a metal can on it), and run a wire from the right end of it through a 1k-5k pot to ground. Its that simple. For the RF gain to work, the radio's 40-db pad must be engaged. If you use a 5k pot, I recommend running the POT in parallel with a 2.5k resistor to keep the gain from dropping too fast with a small pot movement. If you have a 2k or 2.5k pot, that works even better.

All radios drift, including the S-9. The 95T dosent drift at all once warmed up. You can add the RF gain to the 95T easily.
