i have a '99 durango, len. use a grant XL, davemade m400, triple mag mount with 9913 coax & predator 10k antenna mounted towards rear of roof, maybe 2' in front of roof rack crossbar.alternator is stock 117 amp unit with single optima battery, will go back to duals at some point-need better mounting location-may add battery box to rear of truck & mount separate optima right NEXT to amp, with quick disconnects so i can remove it for family outings. radio with magnum filter cord is currently velcroed to front of console for ease of removal, amp is mounted on wheel well with 6guage quick disconnect, palstar 150m wattmeters' sending unit mounts directly to back of amp, meter goes back to front of truck, also velcroed next to 4x4 shifter, so i can move it to dashboard when parked & dxing. amp keys 250-300 AM, pep 900+ on AM, have to turn down mic gain on SSB to limit pep to 650 or so-only RFI experienced with this setup is 'liftgate open' lite flickers UNLESS i move mount to front of roof, then lite stays off, & at full power i come through speakers with stereo on-front end overload of stereo do to massive amounts of rf being forced thru, but hey, not bad for the setup. more then 650 watts pep on SSB & voltage PLUMMETS, & truck runs rough, back it down to 650 watts & it runs fine. AM though i can get 900+ pep & no bucking... when i set up this mobile, to feel things out for problems, i used a 2 x 2290 amp with XL & wilson 2000 on CHEAP mag mount. ALL my lights flashed, wipers waved at me, truck bucked, etc. wasn't sure if i would be able to run any power, til i tried triple mag mount with rgx8 HEAVY shield. most of my RFI disappeared immediately with the better coax. added bigger amp & had minimal problems. went to 9913 double shield coax & davemade amp & my problems went from 'acceptable' to 'hardly worth mentioning'.

as for another way to mount radio, there are the pedestal mounts that bolt to floor & arm adjusts radio to be where you want it. i have thought about that, but velcro has worked thus far at about $75 less! the 4x4 shifter is what throws a kink into mounting & the console is too small to gut & mount radio inside. haven't seen any durango-specific aftermarket consoles that will fit radio inside & are not outrageously priced. yeah, this is where a smaller radio such as magnum 257 comes into play-BUT it is NOT what i am looking to run. my next alternative is an icom ic706mkIIg, rf expanded for 11m, then i can run 6m as well, mobile, & the removable front face will allow more freedom in mounting. but $1k is not budgeted for the mobile at the moment!
VELCRO!

Patzerozero now thats alot of info I do not plan on running a big amp but I do intend to use a kl-400 with quick disconnect, for the reason it has 6 levels.
But I did noticed that the durango's up to 2000 the 4X4 shift is on the floor 2001 it's on the dash by the heat controls.
I thought of pedistal mount and I do have one some where around the house but the next thing is to find it.
I want to mount the radio so that its kinds out of the way I have the same problem as a few on the forum my wife hates radios,so I think buying a 257 is out of the question as well.
I will keep an eye on this post maybe more will come in.
Thank you Patzerozero hope to catch you on the net.

Does the 01 have the 5.2L or the 4.7L? I have seen less stalling/sputtering problems with the 5.2L as it uses a standard spark distribution as opposed to coil packs per plug. the 4.7L has packs.

We have an 03 with the 4.7L no amp. It does fine even with higher powered radios. Like Pat's ours is velcroed, using a mag mount.

Chad it has the 4.7 I did not want to go with the 5.2 or 5.9 to much for what I need my son has the hemi and you can watch the gas guage drop.*ouch*
But the velcro I am trying to picture it what it looks like, you mean it's velcroed under the dash?
And it holds firm, the typr of antenna I would be useing as stated a wilson 1000 mag mount on the roof.
I have allways had good luck with the wilsons than the K-40's would love to SS 102 but I don't want to punch holes in the durango.
Even if I don't use the kl-400 the rdaio works great even with out it I guess I will not loose any sleep over not haveing an amp in line.
Thank you Chad for the information it will help as we all know the more information the better we are.

my console's top lifts up, & it's molded with 3 drink-holder on top of tranny hump. i put a BIG piece of velcro just under top's latch/front of console. my 9913 coax is very stiff, so it aids in holding the grant XL up, but it really doesn't need it if the velcro is big enough. can't use 2 of the drink holders when radio is mounted, & i do remove or hide radio when parking-in the heat the velcro may slide under the weight of the radio. i've replaced the velcro twice, but would rather do that then drill holes...
as for using the amp with the 'suspect' ignition-either try to change the coax on the mag mount or get a mag mount that WILL allow you to change the coax. 95%+ double shielded rg8x coax is available & works well. i'm sure it'll be fine with your kl400, since it made MAJOR improvements while i ran 900 watts. BEST QUALITY coax with the HIGHEST POSSIBLE % braid coverage helps to keep RF(your watts) from escaping through cruddy shielded wire & causing interference to things. you want the RF to stay IN the coax so your watts can radiate from your ANTENNA.

It should, Most daimler products are using the same alternator now. You can always have yours re-wound by a competent electric shop. We are VERY fortunate to have a competent rewinder/auto electronics tech here in town. An Iranian fellow named Sammy with a heart of gold and the workmanship to back it up. He also has a beautiful daughter my age :-)

easy chad...alternators, not daughters...some versions of chero/grand chero of same era used alts 80 amps thru 130 amps, depending on engine & tow packages, as far as i know, they're all in the SAME case, & MOST V8's used same pulley as well
relatively inexpensive & great for 5 transistors or less!
