ive been searching praying hoping and looking for a new radio but i dont know what i want/need. i just want a am ssb so help me now cause i thought the galaxy 979 was a uniden 148 too thats what they are advertising at premium elec... i like the way the 979 looks plus i thought most of the radios were made by uniden any way plus i dont see mutch difference from the galaxy 979 and a uniden 148... even our hc-130p air craft HF band (wish i could get one of those 1800 watts on ssb and 3-29.999 MHz) radios are made by uniden... also i dont like the mic jack on the side seems like it would break eventually. plus i work with this stuff every day and man i dont know what i want, im a noob. i do know i dont need a freq counter on a 40 chnnel radio when i know those freqs by heart and i want talk back ssb and moderate power. i dont want an export radio. HELP!!!! "tech808 you got yer ears on"? rofl

ps i really like the 979 the more i think about it.

TR-296 is a really good radio. It is basically the OLD style 148GTL with the exception of the PLL chip which is an RCI8719 instead of the original 8719

A Uniden Grant, or Cobra 148 will treat you very nice - just don't buy one of the 148's with the Soundtracker technology...

A Magnum 257 is a great SSB radio and not much more than a new grant or 148. Might be a little more radio than you need though :-)

the 'good' grants & 148's aren't made anymore, brew. neither are the TR296's, but i recommended them because they've only recently been discontinued & are still around. they are EXACTLY the same as the 'good' ones-there are no other radios that are EXACTLY the same, except the NEW 148's, which I haven't had a problem with yet, but i guess it's a psychological thing why others don't like 'em...

I have to agree with Pat. 296 and only a 296 if you want a good CB mobile. The 696 is also a nice mobile but it is second behind the 296

Hey Brew, I have a 148 NWST in the mobile. Now out of box I was disgusted but after some good teck work my 148 now screams and the recieve is so good. Now as for the sound tracker switch my tech has used it to turn on a preamp and I dont use the sound tracker option. Its more like a sound slacker option. All it really does is narrow up the freq and gets rid of splatter and other garbage noise, like a beefed up noise blanker. I would buy another and have my favorite tech perform his magic again. I really love that backlight. Its so cool at night down a country road, really dark out , the cool illumination that fills the front seat for my lady and I,ya know, gotta have some light so you can see stuff...lol

Yeah...the soundtracker stuff was kinda of a waste. The 296 will definitely make you happy Krillin63.

I've owned the 969 mobiles from Ranger and the 296 is actually a much better radio. The 969's never tuned up great for me and weren't great for driving amps. I got much more swing out of my older cobras.

Congrats on your new radio purchase..have fun!
