Hi,

Any ideas when the Cobra 200 GTL-DX will be available??

Also any clues on what the Frequency coverage could be if converted into 'Export' mode??

I heard that 25-29Mhz was very likely when converted, what do you think??

Cheers

Timeslice,

As soon as the Forummaster gives me the Information on the COBRA 200 GTL DX 4-BAND AMATEUR RADIO I will make a post announcing them.

As for what the Frequency Coverage will be after conversion, I will have to wait until I have one to convert and find out.

And the Forummaster will be sending me one from the 1st shipment to do a Review on for the Copper Forum Members.

When I see "4 band radio", I instantly think it will cover 4 amateur radio bands. It appears to me that it covers the 10 meter band only and the frequency coverage of the radio is broken up into 4 banks of channels within the 10 meter band. This is a little deceiving. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Stickshift - Yes, it's just like every other "10 Meter" CB radio out there. I don't know that I'd call it deceiving, but it's certainly inaccurate.

From my Microsoft Word Thesaurus English (US)

Band =
Group / Gang / Crew / Possie / Crowd / Mob

So I guess with 4 Groups of 40 channels it would be the same as 4 Bands of 40 channels.

Just a thought

Can't wait to get one and actually see what the coverage is on those 4 bands or 4 groups of 40 channels on 10 Meters and then after it is converted with the 10 & 11 Meter bands.

Oh great...I finally narrowed down my next rig between the S-9,257 or Connex 4800...and now this..great just great!
I'll calmly sit back and wait for a review on the Cobra 200...maybe tomorrow? :-):-)
Still have the S-9 in a big lead though..Cobra is a huge underdog in my book..hope to see something great from them again!

Convert em and tell us the deal-o...need to know..Cobra 200 is on my possiblity list too.

Found out more information about the Cobra 150 GTL DX. Here's the converted "Band Plan":

Frequency Coverage
------------------

A - 26.065 - 26.505
.A - 26.515 - 26.955
B - 26.965 - 27.405
.B - 27.415 - 27.855
C - 27.865 - 28.305
.C - 28.315 - 28.755
D - 28.765 - 29.295
.D - 29.305 - 29.695

The leading decimal point in the channel LED show different bands, and trailing decimal points are used to show the "A" channels.

Conversion is simply a resistor removal - R138. It's an SMD resistor - the radio uses all surface mount devices.

Hollowpoint,

I am confused from your post above I thought you already had the radio and had done the conversion yourself but I guess I was wrong since in your other post you said you do not even have the radio yet.

How do you know what coverage the radio actually has without having the radio or how simple the conversion is if you have not performed the conversion yourself on it?

From your post in the Modification Area,

(I'm not wild about just an AM/FM radio either, but I bought one just to have one. I should have it Thursday according to the tracking information.)

Sorry Lon, I didn't intend to make you think that I had the radio already and did the modification on it. I found the information on a website along with the schematic, board layout, alignment and conversion information.

I read on that site that distributors were given all of this information before the radio was first shipped. I figured Copper was just waiting until they had the radio available for shipment.

Hey, Does anyone think that these radios (either the 150 or 200GTL) might be a rather limited production model like the rare Cobra 148 F GTL DX Plus that was only available in 1997???

I might get the 200GTL for that reason. Cobra seems to do that with their models (short life).

how does the 150gtl pcb board look? Is it pure cobra or is there any similaritys to another of the other export radios??? (just wondering if Cobra is OEM'ing from another source). Thanks

I haven't bought any export radios in years, so I can't really compare it to anything made with surface mount components. It does seem very well done, and the heat sink is huge! The final transistors are mounted to the heatsink through the board near the middle instead of at the edge. Overall I'm pretty impressed with the build quality and I can't wait for the Cobra 200 GTL DX!

It seems pretty decent. I used it a little bit yesterday and today, and because propogation was strong when I was using it I couldn't make a groundwave contact, so I can't really make a good comparison. Additionally, I'm currently working with a dipole in my attic and that doesn't really help with local contacts.

Overall I guess I like the radio for an AM/FM only unit. The way frequencies are displayed before conversion is ingenious. The decimal point between the digits indicates 28 MHz when it's off and 29 MHz when it's on. The decimal after the second digit indicates 5 KHz when it's on and 0 KHz when it's off. The digits themselves indicate the first two places to the right of the decimal of the frequency in MHz. So "30." on the display would mean you're on 28.305 MHz, and "8.6" would indicate 29.860 MHz.

There is no "Delta Tune" so you can't adjust the frequency, but it does have a 10 KHz switch. Why I don't know because unmodified or modified the radio doesn't skip. When it's modified the "A" channels are shown with the right decimal point. Each band switch selection actually covers two bands, and the left decimal point indicates the second band. CB is on the first of the "B" bands, So CH13 is shown as 13 in the display and 19A is shown as "19." on the display.

Other notes:

The radio receives without the microphone plugged in.

High power is 15watts and Low power is 4 watts. I don't own a decent power meter so I can't tell you how accurate they are.

I don't like the RF gain control. It's the outside knob and the inside knob is the Microphone gain. I constantly fiddle with the RF gain control and rarely adjust the microphone gain so I wish they were reversed.

The speaker leads are on a plug so you don't have to unsolder them to take the botton cover off. Nothing really interesting down there, but it's still nice.

YIKES! maybe actually seeing & using it, it would be better then it seems-CONFUSING! sounds as though it could be interesting...it mods easy enough & freq coverage is good-that's a start! then again, i would not buy a radio without SSB, so i'll wait til that comes & see how it does.

After conversion it's simple enough. Each switch position (A,B,C,D) has 2 40 channel bands. The left decimal point differentiates between them, and the right decimal point shows the "A" channels. The channel selector just scrolls through them - including the "A" channels - in order.

Before conversion - 10 meter mode - the display is used differently. The two digits show the two digits to the right of the decimal point of the frequency. For example, if you were on 28.300 it would show the two digits to the right of the decimal point or 30.

The left decimal point in the display indicates either 28 MHz when it's off, or 29 MHZ when it on. For example, if you're on 29.600 the display would show 6.0 or 60 if you were on 28.600.

The right decimal point adds 5 KHz, so the display would show 6.0. if you were on 29.605 or 60. if you were on 28.605.

I'm waiting for the 200 GTL DX too. It's going to be a cool radio.

Sorry but not quite that simple.

If the Radio is 100% "Stock" 10 Meter Mode, it will show channels from:

A~1 -49
B~50-99
C~00-49
D~50-70 on the 4 bands.

After Conversion it will show:

A~1-40
B~1-40
C~1-40
D~1-35

You will notice that Band D is NOT a 40 channel band after conversion but will have 35 channels.

now the stock 10 meter channel scheme reminds me of...??? was it the hr2510 that had 50 channels per band AFTER mod???
after looking at the pic & reading a few times, i THINK i'm starting to get it-no freq display, that's why the decimal point moves...

Lon - I don't know how yours works after conversion, but mine works like this:

Band A - 80 channels:
1 - 40 (26.065 - 26.505) and .1 - 4.0 (26.515 - 26.955)

Band B - 80 channels:
1 - 40 (26.965 - 27.405) and .1 - 4.0 (27.415 - 27.855)

Band C - 80 channels:
1 - 40 (27.865 - 28.305) and .1 - 4.0 (28.315 - 28.755)

Band D - 75 channels:
1 - 40 (28.765 - 29.295) and .1 - 3.5 (29.305 - 29.695)

Just for snicks I got out my cheapo Radio Shack power meter and MFJ dummy load to check the output, and MFJ 259B to check frequency. It was very close to 4 watts on Low and 15 watts on high at both ends of the spectrum. The top end did seem to drop off a little, but it was only about the width of the needle on the 20 watt scale. The frequency was pretty close - certainly within the accuracy limits of my MFJ 259B.

I didn't feel the need to do any kind of alignment on mine because it seemed to work okay, but I did find alignment information on the web at the same place that I found the conversion information, board layout and schematic. I emailed that information to you Lon - did you get it?

I don't know why you'd need a frequency counter to use the radio as long as you know the band plan. It's similar to other AM/FM "10 Meter" radios - it's just that there are 80 channels per band and the display is a little different. Besides, on AM or FM you can be a good deal off frequency and it doesn't matter.

One more feature I found - The radio remembers the last channel you were on in each band and it does it through power off and power disconnection too. I would imagine after a while without power it would lose the memory, but it's pretty cool anyway.

Has anyone removed R676 to access the "Government Frequency Range?" I'm curious if the frequencies are added to the "Export Range" or if they change the radio to an entirely different band plan.

I don't have the necessary equipment to solder SMD components so I'm leary about crushing R676 without knowing what will happen first.

LOL - I'm saving my pennies to buy a Cobra 200 GTL DX!

If I had the right equipment I'd just desolder it to see what it does and put it back if I didn't like it - but I don't have the right gear for SMD.

Hollowpoint, check your e-mail. These new Cobras should be hot items. I can't believe the incredible prices. These radios will certainly increase in price after they have been in production for a while. Look out Magnum S-9 and Galaxy 95T, a cheaper and similar powerful radio is comiing your way.

From what I could tell the radio sounded great heard him 20 miles away and still sounded good.
Just woundering if anyone else knows about this radio.
