I have a cobra 2000 gtl that was never touched inside, the guy I got it from said it was off frequency from the day he bought it but only a little and he did not use the radio but a few times and packed it away so he never sent it back or even took it to a tech.

What I want to know is is it posible for me to adjust it myself with just the counter on the radio? I know my 696 is dead on so it I set the course and fine clarifier adjustment in 12o clock position and then tune a signal comming in with the 696 then adjust something in the cobra 2000 till it sounds as good as the 696 then it will be on too. but then is there a adjustment to just tune the counter to match the 696 on that signal? Is this posible to just tune it to match 696 and if this will work does anyone know what #s the adjustments are? I looked in coppers mod section and found nothing to help.

Thanks,
AP

Set the clarifier to center frequency - however you like it to be centered, and then with the radio on RX, adjust these inductors in this order:
L59-USB
L22-LSB
L23-AM

VR5 is to adjust the TX frequency. It adjusts all modes so you should adjust the receive frequencies first, and then adjust VR5 to synchronize transmit.

Yes, you can sync it to the 696 by whistling into the microphone and zero beating the tone with the receiver of the 696.

Thanks Hollowpoint445,

Is there a way once every thing is aligned to the 696 to just adjust the counter without effecting anything else? cause I think it`s also off, I know this cause when the 2000 is sounding the same as the 696 the 696 is dead on lets say 27.3850 but my 2000 is showing 27.3853.

so even when the 2000 is adjusted on frequency the counter shows off.

Thanks for all you info and help,
AP

P.S. I was advertizing the 2000 to sell but after useing it for a few days I love the way it sounds and the recieve is alsome so I am keeping it. they seem to be great radios.

CT501 is the trimmer for the counter.

Because this radio is so far out of whack it would be a good idea to take it to a tech who has the proper equipment to do a full alignment on the radio. I don't think it would cost much, and then you'd be sure it was operating properly.

Does anyone know of a good tech that can be trusted with an old radio that I could send it too for compete alignment and peak-tune?

Thanks,

I emailed the tech 8541 but no reply so I`m going to do it myself. I just found the TC501, I dont understand, I put the screwdriver on it to adjust it but the counter goes crazy and I cant read it. when I take the tool away it goes back to theway it should be. How do I do the adjustment?

You make it with a tool made for adjusting trimmer capacitors. I don't know if Radio Shack even stocks them anymore - but they did at one time.

If you don't have such a tool you can make a small adjustment and remove the tool to see what the results are. It'll take longer, and you'll want to be careful that you don't damage the trimmer with your screwdriver.

Yea, I use a small magnetic screwdriver. I will go to radio shack and see if they have the trimmer set.I have a freind close to me who will get on his radio and clarify me in on the 696 then I will switch to the 2000 and adjust it till I sound good to him, then will adjust my counter on the 2000 till it matches the 696. I will do the same with the receive, when he talks to me I will clarify him in on the 696 and swich to 2000 and adjust him in till he sounds the same as the 696 then adjust the counter to the 696.
Does this sound like a good plan? I know my 696 is right on in every thing.
Thanks,
AP

me again, I did what Hollowpoint445 said and adjusted just a little at a time till I got it right.
worked out real good and now it`s all lined up to my 696. It was neat doing this,I think i want to get the minimum equipment that I would need to start doing all my own work.anyone know what that would be? I got the bug now.

hardware store, 1 of those BIG 12 pound sledgehammers i found has worked the best. several rolls of HEAVY DUTY duct tape & EVERY tech needs several pairs if VICE GRIPS. you can then "FIX" anything from radios to cars to kids toys!!
EASY, airplane, i'm just kidding

All you need is WD40 and duct tape. If it moves and in ain't supposed to tape it. If it doesn't move and its supposed to, spray it!
