Yaesu MD100 Kenwood MC-60 Heil HM-10 not in that order all 3 are great mics not into all that echo reverb stuff like good clean audio. |

One word.....Piezo...before that I had many favorites including D104M6, 575 and DM452 (which runs a close second just for sound quality sake!)

My favorite mobile mic is the Turner RK76. Back in the day...everyone said it sounded the best for my voice. I sold it with my President Jackson and Gray 300 in 1994. However, I found one on e-bay about 4 months ago, bought it, cleaned it up and fixed some minor issues, and sounds very good, so I'm told.
Desk mic...Astatic D-104 TUG8.......old but reliable. |

For mobile radios I use stock microphones. When they're close talked they sound good, they're cheap so I don't care if they're damaged, and there isn't an amplifier to cause RF or AF squeals.
I'm pretty superficial about base microphones. They all sound pretty good when used right (close talked and only enough gain to fully modulate the radio), so I like to use microphones with meters to watch and switches and pots to play with or something cool looking. I usually wind up using a Kenwood MC-85, Kenwood MC-60A, Ranger A/C 7000 U/D, or Icom SM-10. When I need a compression microphone for a little more kick on CB I like the Turner +3. |

For many years I ran Astatic TUG-8 D-104 on the base, still have 2 of them, I guess my favorite is the Silver Eagle after that it's the Turner Plus 3 and Super Sidekick. In the mobile where I don't often keep a radio, I like the older Cobra Dynamike Plus. as of late I need to start looking for a new mobile microphone might try the Astatic D104M6C, the old Cobra mobile microphone is very old and starting to give me problems, so I'm thinking of retiring it.

Well for a base I love Turners or the Big lollipop style of mics. In a mobile the best I ever had was a Telex Noise Cancelling mic designed for airplanes. I cant recall the model number bit was made of clear plastic. |

Astatic D-104 T-UG8-Stand (amplified)Is the one ive been told sounds the best so thats what ive stuck with thru the years. Tried a couple of Turner desk mics but sound too basey. |

Sorry I forgot one. My ICOM IC-735 has a Shure 444-T on it, these microphones are and were in short supply, it is a power microphone. Shure 444s non amplified are easy to find, but the 444-T is a rare find and is a very nice sounding microphone. One of these Sundays when conditions are good I'll run the ICOM on the CEF LSB net. The transceiver is about 125 watts and I've been told by my friends that I talk to the most, that they can tell when I'm running the ICOM without me telling them. They say the audio is super clean and crisp.

Don't the Turner Super sidekick have an internal tone control? One of the Turners does, I don't remember which one. |

That control on the bottom of a Turner Super Sidekick is not a tone control, it is an audio balance control for the older tube radios.

Shure triple 4 that i run on my old Kenwood 520. Allways had good reports.
Mine was not apmplified but gives a nice bass tone to the modulation.

I somehow knew I was going to be called on calling the bottom control what I've heard a lot of the older shop techs. call the bottom control an audio balance control. Yes, it is somewhat of a gain control, but when the microphone first came on the market some techs. were calling the bottom control a balance control. |

i tried on my RCI 2995dx everybody
says it sounds best. My wife sounds great

Turner Super Sidekick and Astatic D-104. They work well but mostly, they look great! Moderator136, I always used a Kenwood MC-50 on my 520 and had excellent results. I bought both of them new in '76.

oh yeah, the ONLY power mic i use 100% of the time is the astatic road devil on my rci5054dx100. EVERY SINGLE audio report i have gotten is GREAT! when i 1st got the radio, reports were good, but was told to try a couple different mics to see if i could get a bit more punch out of it. when he heard the road devil, he asked if i got a new radio, it sounded so much better then the rci.
as for 11meter use, turner +2 & shure 526t are my favorites. always seemed to have most PUNCH AM & SSB on any radio i used 'em on. i have at least 20 different mics, desk & handheld, & do try 'em all from time to time on different rigs. the main 'problems' encountered are too much background noise or audio tone too high or low. 5 different xl's may respond differently to the same mic, each radio has ITS own preference to a mic. i very rarely use other then the stock mic. |

Yankee - I never heard the control on the bottom referred to as anything other than a gain control - but I didn't really get into radio until the microphone was long out of production.
It is EXACTLY a gain control, and is there to allow the microphone to work with a wide range of radios. Most newer radios don't need much output because they have a great deal of gain in their audio chain, but some older gear needs an amplified microphone just to sound decent. Especially tube gear looking for a high impedance microphone with high output levels. |

Astatic 636L Good noise canceling mic. Tried others but always went back to it as long as the radio has a mic gain. Astatic D104M6B for a power mic on radios without a mic gain. For a base the Silver Eagle is great and I always like the Realistic base mic on Navohos. Number 1 most favorite is the 636L. Nice looking and solid and never ever had a problem with one. Just got too remember to hold it very close to your mouth if you talk soft into the mic like myself. |

I'll have to check out one of those +3's and see what they look like. My Super Sidekick pick up lots of background noise so I have to keep it backed down. I respect your opinion on powermikes because your profile shows that you must own every powermike that's come down the pike!

I never run a power microphone with much gain. I keep the microphone gain on the radio full bore, close talk the microphone, and only use enough output to fully modulate the radio.
Yeah - I own quite a few microphones. Just the +3s and Super Sidekicks take up lots of space. +3s work great when you need a little more average modulation - and who doesn't?
I used to be under the impression that Super Sidekicks had compression amplifiers - but according to the Turner microphone wiring guide I own they don't. They are nice to use and great to look at. I wish Turner microphones were still made. |

I like the Road King 56.
Not only is it a great noise cancelling mic but it also makes your voice a little bit brighter so your signal punches through the noise. |
