I have a humming noise that started about 11/2-2 weeks ago and cant find where its comming from. I have it mostly on my 696,my 2000 dont have it very much or my old sears 23ch. my walkie talkie is quiet too till I hook it to my antenna the it starts hummimg too. I turned off everything in the house with no luck. walked around the property but quiet. only there when I hook walkie talkie to antenna.

I never had this problem before.

coax has rabbit chew marks on it but it`s been chewed for 4 months now unless it is only now starting to go bad.

Replace the coax and put that chewed coax on the ground for rabbit so he will stay away from the new coax.

I touched the walkie antenna to the maco and got noise, I took another walk this time down below my property to a new development going in. I started getting close to a house that the people moved into about two months ago and the humming noise got real loud at this house. they must have hooked up a new device around two weeks ago and it`s causeing this hum.

Now how do I go about aproching someone tha just moved in my area. I dont want to make enemeys.

and if we do find the device how do I quiet it?

Airplane1,

First off I would replace the Coax and it may solve your problem from the Rabbit.

The the problem could be from about anything from a battery charger to yard light transformer, or any number of other items.

Any break in the outer housing/casing of coax will allow moisture to build up and the problem could be 100% your coax and it may take several weeks or more for you to notice it.

Also you did not mention if you checked both PL-259's on your Coax and the connection of the coax to your antenna and or any Jumpers you are using.

You did not happen to mention what your SWR is now?

If you replace your Coax and still have the problem then you may have to resort to legal means to solve the problem.

Also check your House Wiring to make sure there is a good Ground Connection in the Box.

And is you Antenna, Mast/Tower, and Equipment grounded well?

Any of the above or a combination of any of the above can cause problems.

Hope this helps,

Lon

You won't.Probably an alarm system. They're everywhere in my town, when it's dead quiet, you can scan the cb band and find all of them.Got a beacon or something on 23,very close, and when skip is running, you can hear others out there answering it,weird. But it runs only after hours,so I think it's one of those brinks security systems and the skip just allows me to hear it's wireless link-up.Bigbob P.S.your problem could also be an invisible fence for a pet.

Waskally Wabbits....LOL..good one there
Duck246!
Yeah Roger better replace that coax and
maybe bury it if you have varmits chewing it up.
Break out some carrots and feed those hungry rabbits. I cemented my sidewalk a couple of
weeks ago and those Waskally Wabbits left
footprints in it...LOL...I better check my
coax, it may have holes in it.
Yeah, like Lon said, get new coax and make
sure it's still grounded properly and all
that good stuff. If that don't help. Calmly try to work out your noise problem with your new neighbor. First make 100% sure thats where the noise source is coming from. Hopefully, the
problem can be resolved easily. Best of Luck!

Same junk here too. Some nights it's so quiet and I can hear everyone. Then all of a sudden some hum comes in and I can't find it anywhere. I completely cut power to my shack and ran my radio off a battery. I still got it. I think it's something in somebody's house close by.

Well I checked the connectors and there fine,I checked all my jumpers and there fine, checked my swrs and there good as before. I have a 25ft coax that is in good conditions so I hooked it to the antenna and then to the walkie talkie and got the hum . I do think I will walk again today just to make sure where it`s comming from.

I hope the new neighbors are nice, they seem to keep to themselves and never venture outdoors.

If they have something charging batteries inside their house, that could be your problem.

The guy behind us moved and since then, I haven't heard that noise. Don't know if maybe he had some kind of medical machine or charger or what running inside his house.

I had a similiar experience in my shack. I was hunting a hum like that for weeks. It turned out to be a battery charger for a drill. One of those 18v deals. The battery was messed up and causing the hum I was hearing in my radios. I changed coax, antenna's, tried every radio I had and still got the hum. I unplugged the charger...no hum. I gave the whole drill kit away.

Look for stuff like that and if you know the people close around you, ask them what they've got plugged in like that. That will probably be your source. When I first plugged in the drill charger, I didn't get the hum, but later it came in...

Hope this helps!

Oh yeah...my kid is deaf and has a cochlear implant. He can hear with it on. It consist of a device implanted into his skull and a small strip that goes into his cochlea (?) to stimulate it so it produces electrical waves for his brain to translate into sound. The outside unit is a small pack that contains the processor. Via a fiber optic cable it goes to a headpiece that is held over the implant site by magnets. The headpiece has a mic in it and takes sound, converts it to radio waves, sends it down the cable, processor converts that to another signal, back up the cable, where the headpiece by frequency sends it into the implant. The implant creates the electric current to stimulate the cochlea. My point to telling you this is if the equipment is on and you remove the headpiece, it beeps. When it beeps, I can hear it in my radios if he's close to my shack. Also in the car, he blanks out most stations, FM. The equipment works on FM frequency, though I'm not sure what frequency it's on. I had some trouble with interferrence and it turned out to be him. I can't use my radios when he's outside close to my shack playing. And if I crank up anything with any power, he says it hurts his head when I talk.

Maybe the new neighbors kid is deaf? The hum you hear could be his charger for the batteries for his processor. If they go bad, they'll cause a lot of trouble like that too...

Well the noise is gone, I talked with my neighbor and asked if they hooked anything up in the last 2 weeks because I started getting a humming noise in my radio and it`s affecting my being able to hear people I talk to, I told him I made sure that it was comming from his house befor I even asked him.

At first he sounded a little mad and told me his house is new and there is nothing that would be doing that. I asked him if there is anything that was hooked up lately like battery chager or any other device.he said he has a battery charger for his classic car but it`s not hooked up now and he checked and it was`nt hooked up.But he said chargers wont do that.

his wife interrupted and said there gandson got a Power Wheels electric go kart for his birthday two weeks ago and it`s in there garage and she has it pluged in for the las two weeks.

She went in the garage unpluged it and guess what! the hum stoped. he walked away and would`nt talk to me after that but she was very nice. She told me that it will be going to there grandson`s house so I dont need to worry anymore about the noise.

Thanks for all the advice, if you all did`nt tell me about the chargers I would never have asked about them.

I told ya. Glad you figured it out. Your neighbor needs a chill pill...but he'll be ok. Sooner or later he'll want to see what you are up to...maybe he'll get his own rig...maybe a tower and let you put an antenna up on it...

next door to me had got a lamp that used rf
switch to turn it on. But wait its not what you
think you turned it on just by moving your hand
over it no switch at all. This thing made so much
noise it was S9 on all channels. As it turned out
a ham that lived over a mile away found it.

Wow,
I thought electric items were not supposed to affect radios by law.

That surprises me about the charger and touch lamps.

Did you ever get that antenna up on a tower, say 40' or so?
Looking at that pic of your antenna on the fence and not high up at all you are going to pick up all kinds ground noice there may be close by..get that antenna up in the air and most of your noice well be gone and you also have better luck at not putting out TVI to your new neighbor/s

good luck
