I just got my cobra 148gtl back from a joke of a CB shop and the tech has butchered my radio, Its in worse condition than when I sent it in, and I only sent it in for a tune and allign, It was working at the time I gave it to him. It was made in Malasya, mfg in 1994.
I have No Recieve, I do have static, but nothing else, wont recieve a thing, even when my 2950 is loaded with skip, its dead,the only thing it will recieve is my 2950 sitting right next to it, None of the tuning adjustments make a difference, I have No RF Gain at all, meaning, dosent get louder or quieter when turned. I hooked a preamp up to it to see if it would make a difference in any way, It dosent even raise the noise level, the recieve is just plain dead.
I have a feeling the guy overloaded it some how. I have tried everything I know of besides replacing componets, I have no Idea where to start looking and replacing for something like this, I dont know if it is one little transistor or multiple parts that are bad... everything else seems to be working but the recieve... Anyone know what may be the problem and know how to fix it, I could really use some help, Thanks..

A small-claims attorney is a good start or some other means of retribution,but try adjusting the rx coils with a plastic,not metal adjuster,sounds as if he got them mis adjusted or took a screwdriver to them if the latter,junk it and refer to the fist(not a misprint) part of post.Bigbob |

Walk proud Bruce, a lot of people don't know what this license is or why someone would need one. If some of the radio shop's technicians had this certificate we would have less problems. Isn't you license the same as or as good as the older first class radio telephone? For those that don't know what this certificate is, it's like a PHD. in radio and all electronics communications. |

Rx Coils dont make a difference in any way, I spent 6 hours when skip was rolling strong trying to get anything to come in, only the IF coils affect it, They make the static get just a slight bit louder, have to have a good ear to hear it though, when the 3 are tuned (L15, L13, and L3), thats as far as I was able to get it, the rest of the Rx coils dont change a thing, So I have to suspect that some componet is bad.
I have already replaced the RF AMP from a 2SC1674 TO A 2SC999, I already had the sc999 to mod it, So I went ahead and replaced it, but no difference. the thing wont even recieve my neighbor a 1/4 mile away.
Bruce, You Know Im with you on that one, You know exactly what Ive been through with this guy the last 7 months.

CEF-463: To me it sounds like he did as you think, fired up a lot of power with another radio and over loaded the front end of the 148 and didn't know that the 148 was on line.

Yes It does transmit, When I sent it in, It was in working order, but did need a tune and allign to be up to my standards of a radio. After about a week, I got a phone call, He said it wasnt modulating, and couldnt tune it till it was, 7 months passed by and the same story, no modulation, I finally just took it back, and within 5 miutes of getting it home and one simple adjustment, I had it modulating, then skip started rolling in but the 148 was dead, then I realised, I have no recieve.... and thats where im at now, The transmit works just fine now, but still needs a tune and allign, but I have to get this recieve straightened out first... All in all, they guy didnt do a darn thing but screw it up...
Yankee, Yup, thats exactly what I think, I had seen him with multiple radios and amps all hooked up working on them on his bench, so that is very feasible... I just want to get it fixed...

CEF 463: Years ago when I lived back home in upstate New York, the tech at the local radio shop kept his customers happy by only working on one radio at a time. It was a standing rule one radio on the bench at a time. He was busy all the time and most times a radio would be in and out the same day and repaired correctly. |
