Your power supply may be going bad.
People around here use 20-25 Amp supplys
for there RCI 2970's.
But, you didn't key up, so, i'm guessing
something up with your power supply. And
keying up 50+ watts probably would not work
on a 10 Amp Supply anyhow.
Does it run your other radios???

the 2970 draws alittle more than most.. it draws 18 amps... so that could be the reason.. the power supply was not enough... try it on a bigger PS..

i agree take it 2 a good tech.if thats not it id check antenna swr .you will need a bigger power supply if ya plan on talking on it.if ya have
the owners manual i belive it tells ya a powersupply of at least 25amps is recommened and
thats from rci.. youll burn it up on that
10 amp

Then something could be wrong with the
radio. It shouldn't get hot unless
your transmitting on high power for long
periods of time. Have a good Tech check
it out...

Sounds to me like somebody took a screw driver to the biasing and the thing is self exciting and self occillating, take it to a GOOD tech and get it realigned,it may not be too late.Bigbob
