Is there any way a person could take an old satellite dish and build a comms(scanner/short-wave)antenna to be put on the arm on the dish and would it effectiviley work? |

When I lived in the boonies, I took the LNB off of a satellite dish (18 INCH) and stuck a mag mount cell antenna on the arm. Plugged it into my phone and had marginally better signal strength.
I experimented with all different positions with the phone mag mount antenna and setting it infront of the dish was about the best for signal.
However, i'd think for a scanner antenna you'd wanna be omnidirectional right? If you want to obtain maximum rx from a fixed station then a dish may help aslong as the dish is as large as your antenna. |

You'd be much better off with standard gain antennas for scanning, and a longwire or dipole for shortwave.
Satellite dishes are meant for frequencies of several GHz. |

A dish will give little to no gain unless its at least 1/2 wave in dia. the more waves the higher the gain .... |
