Hey guys just wanted to get in here and post a bit about my vacation. From the net a few of you know I was Camping in Brown County Indiana with my family. My dad CEF500 and myself CEF491 had our radios with us. The spot we were at is just about one of the highest elevations in the state. Now I'm not bragging on my mobile radio but I have invested alot of work into it so it performs the way it does. Normal range at home is around 10 to 20 miles with 100 watts. Now sitting atop this high elevation with a Wilson Silver Load with 100 watts and cobra 148 I made a trip from around Nashville, Indiana to Evansville, Indiana and chatted with Party Bandit for a while. Looking at the map I found that its 120 miles to Evansville. This was not skip and was at around 12 midnight. Now I know it does not matter how big your radio is its all about how high you can get your antenna. CB back home is pretty much dead but when I was high in the hills with my ears popping I could hear stations on every channel all over the place. I was just truely amazed how many people there really is out there and most were base stations.

Hey thanks! We had fun but most of all just hung out and relaxed with some burgers and a few cold ones. It really is so cool and amazing what a difference altitude makes. Sounded even like a different radio and was really hardly any noise or garbage out there.I hope to live out there someday. Wish I could get my antenna up higher, makes me really want my ham tik now. I think hams are allowed 200 feet. Am I wrong? Anyway I dont think I would be allowed to use CB on it that high up.73 hotwire |

Dale, i have large mountains and smaller
mountains boxing me in where i live.
Now, for mobile radio communications
there are a few mountains i can drive
up and talk for long distances. |

DAVIS , HIGHEST POINT HERE IN PA. -- ABOUT 20 MILES , AND I STILL HAVEN,T DROVE UP THERE TO SHOOT SKIP . Amateurs are allowed 200' as long as there aren't in a flight path or restricted by local regulations.
When I had a 102" whip on my roof I could drive to the top of a hill and compete locally with the best base stations. It really annoys some people when a mobile can talk farther than they can on their base. |

Hi guys, and welcome to the hill top fever that I've enjoyed for a good many years. The best that I've been on is Mt. Graylock, North Adams Mass.
Get up on that monster and talk to about 8 states without skip and with skip conditions the whole US, Canada and many other places are yours. It's a nice road up the mountain, but you have to take your time so you don't over heat your vehical, and coming back down off the mountain I advise down shifting as some of the road is a little on the steep side. When you're up on top stations 400 and 500 miles away ask are you sure you are a mobile? You can put a signal into Boston mass. all the way on the ocean side of the state of about a 20 running legal power on sideband, and Graylock is in the far northwest corner of the state. Where I lived in Glens Falls New York, 90 miles away you could peg meters at a 30 from the mountain. Yes,Long Island is local from the mountain. |

If you are a ham and you have a 200 foot antenna, is it legal to use CB on that antenna? |

I assume you mean a CB antenna on the 200' tower. I don't think anyone would care what you put on top of a 200' tower. Who's gonna climb it to check it? Besides, you can hide almost any 11 meter antenna agains a massive horizontal yagi array.

Hotwire, the answer is NO. A HAM has exactly the same privledges and rights as anyone else on CB. We HAMs also have the same restrictions.
I even use a Cobra 148 no mods on CB. |

I use my IMAX 2000 for 12 and 10 meters, so it can legally be put up @ the 200' max. If I use it on 11, that is just the bonus. Plus any 10 meter beam will work on 11 meters. Can you legally put it up 200', yes if you are a licensed Ham. Can you use on 11 meters no, not legally! If you are going to do that, you might want to put a little something up for looks under 60' or no more then 20' feet above the existing structure. My 2 cents. |
