Got my Magnum 257 11/04, am very pleased with it in the mobile, but lately it started losing the memory channels I programmed into it and the last channel used (once every week or so)...I called Magnum and the tech told me the set needs to be always wired to power to keep the board in the set "live" to retain the settings. I now wire it direct to battery and not the ciggy plug, will see how it goes..........hopefully this post may help someone with a similar problem.73..Lee

I only get about a week on my Chipswitched radios and then I have the pain of reprogramming all of the features as well as the memories - so consider yourself lucky.

When I know they'll be disconnected from power for a while I connect a 9v battery to it with an improvised adapter. You might consider making something similar if you remove the radio from your car at night too.

I have both models of the Magnum 257, the new one with the blue lights and the amber lights. The older 257 will hold the memory up to a week, that one is plugged into the accessory fuse in my car. The newer 257 will only hold the memory up to approx 4 hours plugged in the same way, but if I wire it straight to the battery (the way it is now in my other vehicle), there is no loss of memory.
I just wish my brain worked that way (no loss of memory that is)

Would be nice if magnum would include 2 power wires, 1 for retention one for switched.

Even in car stereo the constant power one (battery) is the current carrying lead and the 12V trigger is just that, a trigger to turn it on.

Hey Hollowpoint445, I like your idea with the 9v battery. I'm wondering if you could hook one up in line, (you know like a fuse). I wonder what would happen?? That way you could plug the radio into the acc. plug and not loose your presets and when you turn the vehicle on the radio would come on automagicly… hummm… Call me crazy I'm just curious , yea I know curiosity killed the cat but I figure I have a few more of those 9 lives left in me…

Why not just wire it to the battery and turn it off when not in use?

I don't think I'd mess around with hooking up a 9v if you let the radio in your car. Run the power wires directly to the battery and don't look back.

I use the 9v when I take the radio out of my car and expect it to keep it out for more than a couple of days. I started doing it with a scanner I also used in my car and took out nightly. It came with a 3 wire power cord so I just connected the 9v to the orange wire for memory retention and it worked great. I didn't know if 9v was high enough to keep the memory in the Chipswitched 2510 so I tried it with just a set of clip leads once and it worked fine. I did it enough to warrant making a connector.

Yea Hollowpoint, I don't think I will try that either... I was just thinking outloud. Knowing my luck I would try it an come out looking like Yosimite Sam after the TNT blows up in his face...
...
Or like Homer Simpson DOH!!! while I watch my car go up in smoke...
Anyway, it was just one of those quick hey I wonder things that run through my brain... (it's usually a quick run too...)

Working fine with no memory problems since I hooked it to battery......Maybe I'll run a couple of leads for my memory, Tomcat, LOL
