I have used alot of radios over the years in a mobile(truck driver for 21 years)and have gone thru my loud and proud super trucker stage and used all the standard trucker radios(Galaxy,Connex,General Lee,Magnums and such)and after hearing and using alot of different radios I have come to learn that my old 148GTL is an out standing radio! The reason for bringing this up is I was thinking about getting a new radio and after asking alot of questions of other drivers using some of the newer model radios(sorry pat00,S9 included)i have come to find that my old 148GTL performs as good if not better than all of them.Several drivers I work with have the Magnums(S9,S6,S3 and Delta Force)and I can TX & RX as good if not better than any of them.I guess I was expecting to much from all these new radio's that have come out over the past few years.Oh well just thought I would post my thoughts and see what anyone had to say.

no need to be sorry, mike. as much as i praise my S9(or is that deride galaxy!), my GRANT XL is what powers my mobile cef-skiptalking station!
i won't neccessarily say that the XL is better then the S9 or vice-versa, but i do add whatever XL, LT, 148, & texas ranger 296's i can find to my stockpile for future use at around $150 when brand new, & knowing their performance history, how could they NOT be among the BEST??? they are NO LONGER available-NEW-hence the S9 recommendations. HOWEVER, if you can get your hands on any of those i listed-GET 'EM BEFORE THEY'RE GONE! |

Patzerozero, do you mean that the Texas Ranger 296 radios are no longer being manufactured??. If so, that's a shame. That radio sounds just like a uniden grant, or cobra 148 GTL.

CORRECT, wolverine. exact same radio & it is NO MORE! the texas ranger 696FD1 mobile AM/SSB with freq counter (new 1 with american flag face as well as original that looked like 148f with freq counter)is NOT NOT NOT the same. close-BUT NOT THE SAME! it is a galaxy 959, as is the 949 & texas ranger 696 base. don't expect to do 'THE MODS' to those radios. you want the XL/LT/148/TR296/radio shack???/cherokee???(i forget all those #'s)/general sherman & whatever other clones of the 'original' may be out there. THEY ARE THE SAME!
(DISCLAIMER:not saying anything WRONG with 696 base or 696fd1, fine radios themselves, just NOT the same as XL. as for 959...!!) |

The best mobile radio is the one that fits and doesa the job. Right now I am trying to find a good 2m radio that will fit in the minimum spaces that exist inside and MGB - one of the few cars I know of that I can wind the passenger window up or down and clean the rear window (if it had one) without taking the lap-sash seatbelt off. |

 it's very simple, any of the Unidens that are the same as the original Cobra 148 GTL, and from what I've been hearing even the clones are also good. |

If you don't need SSB and want a great everyday radio with tremendous loud and clear audio with the stock mic extremely quiet and sensitive receive, back-lighting for safety weather channels with alert the Uniden 78 Elite is the radio.
I have a Grant XL and an LT and an Omega Force and the audio on the 78 is scarey loud. I run the 78 in my minivan. My wife was talking to me on it, she was making me wince when she keyed the mic she was so loud and clear. Man she was just slapping me down lol....
The receive is very queit and clear guys, it is very nice.

Pointman,for strickly AM the 76/78/68/66 & 25/29 are hard to beat.When I want to mess with the guys I work with I drag out the Uniden PC66a that was setup back in my LOUD&PROUD Super Trucker days and hook it up to the KL203 and all I hear is"could you please turn it down?"Very loud radio,but the 148GTL,with limiters in place,is just as loud and crystal clear. |

I heard that old Cobra 29s were the preferred radio at keydowns - or so my old friend Painkiller told me years ago. |

25/29 or 66/68/76/78, all the same. & the uniden SSB chassis radios.

Painkiller from Philly. I seem to remember that he was there for college - it was the mid '90s. He was running the ubiquitous '80s Suburban for keydowns. |

I can certainly see why they use the 78 in shoot outs. I have a 68 Elite also and it is a tremendous performer too but it has a little more white noise on the receive than my 78 so I prefer the 78 on long trips as does my wife. No diss to the receive on the 68 it is great. Just not as sweet and quiet as my 78 is. For the size though I feel the 68 can't be beat, again for strictly CB radio use here and for the price it is a good deal.
Perhaps others 68's are not like this? I don't know.

keydowns don't care about receive, just xmit. & they don't use galaxy. all the talk about LOUD galaxy radios & they still use cobra/unidens. what does that tell ya?
yes, the 29/76/78 had a different filter or coupling or something minor, then the 25/66/68 use. |
