Hey guys,I need advice please. What is the best way to run a Sweet 16 from a Ford 7.3 liter power stroke? I have a 110 amp alternator and two 750 CCA batteries. The truck is made to handle a second 110 amp Ford alternator if I like as part of an ambulance package.
Do I get a motor maul, extra deep cycle batteries? Be happy with the DX 500 I have?
My mechanic thinks it may be OK to run as is but worries about the rate of draw versus replenishment to the batteries. I will upgrade them soon to 1000 cca batteries. I am using a 95 T in the truck with a low power switch installed for the 500. It pushes 10 watts with the power down with the low power switch off.

forget the motor maul...unless you have mucho expendable dinero...in which case you could go with the 2nd alternator anyway. i'd see what it costs to setup the 2nd alt, & do it ASAP. run radio from truck alt & amp on dedicated alt. dual 750 cca for truck & 95t should be fine. i'd go dual 1000's for amp...
HOWEVER, with dual 1000cca's & 1 alt, you should have NO PROBLEM with the 1600 & 95t driving it. make sure ALL wiring is good for power draw-to amp, to grounds, grounds from alt, batteries, charge cables, etc etc. 100 amps + or - pulling through MOST stock wiring is asking for trouble. you should see about 350 key & 1kw swing. that's all the dx1600 will do, give or take. dual alts & xforce or davemade type 8 pill with your 95t COULD see 500+ key & 1500+ swing.
make sure antenna will handle 1600, & use ONLY rg8 coax, the thick stuff, or BETTER |

I would be happy to try the X-force. I purchase my equipment and get my service from only one shop/person to keep it simple. He reccomends the Texas because of the relationship between Galaxy and because it is easy for him to order and work on. Different amp means adding a third party but I like the idea. I have a Wilson 5000 antenna available but I run a 9' steel whip now. Am I OK with the whip or the Wilson? I have plently of RGU-13 cable left over and amphenol connectors. All the wiring is heavy gauge or even more than called for. Everything I run has at least one fan on it. I have a 600' mountain near my house and may have spoken to you from it. Again, many thanks. |

sounds good . the texas star will get you out with no problem. either antenna will work fine as well. just make sure the whip keeps swr's/reflect LOW when moving/blowing in the breeze & it doesn't hit the body of the vehicle.
wish i had a 600' mtn around here! of course, i'd always be on the wrong side of it! where are you located? what call do you go by? what freqs? |
