I have a set of M4's about 32'-33'(boom) in the air. I want to raise them up another 5'. That is about as high as I can go due to trees(fold over tower). Will I see a noticable difference or should I leave them alone? I transmit/receive pretty good now, but any improvement, of course, would be even better. Also, I have my vertical gamma pointing down, as it shows in the instructions. A local says that I would be better off with it pointing up. His idea kinda makes sense, but I figured Avanti knows what is best. What are your thoughts on this? Thanks in advance!

Musky,

Welcome to the Copper Forum!

You do not Mention how high you have them in the air now.

If you are Less than 36' in the air then Yes raise them, the higher the better.

But if you are already 36' or above you or anyone else will not notice any real difference by only raising them another 5' unless you are raising them to clear an object in the way/path of the elements such as having the elements above the tower.

My Suggestion is if above 36' leave them alone as that is a lot of work to just add 5 feet.

The Gamma Match is pointing Down to prevent moisture / rain from getting into it and to allow any moisture to drain out.

You instructions are Correct.
(And it is a whole lot easier to adjust them when facing down than to climb even further up a tower to adjust them.)

Lon, I stated that I have them about 32'-33' to the boom. Anyways, I have been here for awhile, but I had to re-register and it appears that I am starting from scratch...........no biggie. I agree on the water getting into them and that can be a big issue here in NW Penna!. Thanks for the info. Looks like I will be adding a small section of Rohn. The hard part is rounding up a few guys to help :-O

the mast is always in the way anyhow, plus I have seen people put a mast above and put a antron 99 on it

Ok any of you know what will happen if I set up a moonraker 4 with only the vert. elements I have all the fiberglass ones (4+ the wire) for the rear but some of the alum. ones are broken so it leaves me parts to put the vert. side up but not the horz. side seems to me it might work

Dave1, you have the parts to make yourself a 4 element beam, go for it. Lay it flat and get it as high as possible. Sit back and shoot some DX!

Musky-Jeff,

My thoughts on this is NO. Knowing what it takes to put into the air stacked 4s it is not worth all the effort and possible problems doing the process all over again for just a few feet to get you to that 36 foot (1 wavelenght) mark...you are at 33ft now so leave them as is, that is my take on this one. My thoughts are if you can't get rid of the trees to go up higher than leave them as is (and the trees will always get larger if not trimmed causing problems if you have to take down anyway). If you are talking 'groundwave' then going up by 10 ft lenghts you might see an improvement of 10 to 15 miles distant each 10 feet raised due to the going higher and going over the horizon more...but if you are talking DX I doubt you see any difference at all until you get to the next wavelenght mark or over 72 feet. I would be more inclined to replace any or all old coax and connectors vs go to all that effort to go up another 5ft that I doubt you will see any difference for what you are trying to achieve.
