OK. Check this out. I've been looking around at different amps. My M80 has two 2290's in it.

OK..what if I do the amp final mod to a radio where I use a 2290 in the radio? Wouldn't this be the same thing as buying the amp with the driver built in, except it's in my radio?

IF NOT..then what could I do to the amp to allow me to run such a setup? Is the problem in the relay that my input runs through or is it another issue?

I have already installed the 2879's and changed a few caps in it. I have a descent improvement, but now I'm thinking of strapping my old 33 to it, it's got the final conversion done to it. Curious to see what it'll do, but I don't want to fry it, not yet anyway.

the 2-2290 m80 is rated at about 60 watts carrier from the AMP, by inputting NO MORE then 4 watts from the radio, carrier, & up to about 30-35 watts pep.

the 2-2879 m200 is rated at about 125 watts carrier from the AMP, but this time no more then 6 watts from the radio, or 100 watts pep.

the 1-2290 x 2-2879 x200 is ALSO rated at about 125 watts max carrier from the amp, but requires less carrier input, probably 3 watts or so to obtain the 125. it'll only handle around 30 watts or so pep.

SO, since most added 2290/1446/454/455/477 final-to-the-radio-mods see considerably LESS then the transistors rated max due to the lack of space for optimum coils, etc, this configuration COULD be used successfully. you just have to set up the amp as normal-keep radio output LOW, & crank it up til you get the proper output from the AMP, but not going over the recommended INPUT to amp-no matter if the output is not as high as expected. HOWEVER, the amp will NOT make ANY more watts then can be expected out of its non-driver-included baby brother.

DISCLAIMER:regarding suggested carrier power from amp; the builders websites sometimes say to expect HIGHER dead keys from amps. sure they will dead key higher-a few times at least! if you talk to them, they suggest LOWER carrier from their amps, go with the lower carrier, it'll last longer. they get more watts then the commercially made amps, they are NOT indestructable however!(i believe davemade sites say 200 watts carrier from m200-DON'T DO IT! keep it around 125.MAYBE 150 if you're feeling daring!)

-just for you,chop!

Just My 2 cents here
I have a Dave Made 2 pill BASE AMP with(2) Toshiba 2sc2879's

3 Watt's out-- dead key 85-Pep 200
4 Watt's out-- dead key 100- Pep 250 to 270
5 Watt's out-- dead key 130-Pep 280 to 300
7 Watt's out-- dead key 200-Pep 350 to 400
The above is when the amp has not been transmiting just checking.

When the amp is hot I mean being used for along time it gets BETTER+ at 4 to 4 and a half watts no more needed.....

This is on a RCI-2950 and a stock mike.

M, if your radio swings the same, say 15 watts with 3 watts carrier as it does with 7 watts carrier, give or take a watt or 2 of swing, the amp should swing its max 400 or so, no matter what the carrier. my daves will swing the same with ANY carrier-unless i lower the PEP input by way of mic gain, AM or SSB. my 4 & 5 can be keyed @ less then 1 watt, not enough to trip relay, & still swing 800+, with NO dead key carrier from amp. a 3 pill can do the same, no carrier but full 400+ on AM. backing down mic gain 75% does NOT reduce audio, but will reduce swing to 150 or so. also, joe will NOT recommend keying 200 watts from that amp-though obviously it will. he recommends adjusting radio up til amp keys 125(150 if NO heat & 1.2:1 or less swrs). it'll still swing 400. 20 volts will allow keying to 300 or so watts, but you still only need to put 4 or so in to get it.

also, depending on just who built your BASE 2 pill, it could be floating 14-16 volts, or more. definitely something you wouldn't want to hook a texas star or KL, or most radios to! some of the x forces(exact copy of dave) float 18v on their bases, & fatboy builds power supplies with hi-lo switches, 14v & 20v. nice.

Well, well, well. Cheesey!! MY BUD!

Hmmm. Well I changed the pills and I haven't got the nerve up to hook up the radio with the amp pill conversion to it yet. I kinda like the S-9 myself, why would I want to hook the Galaxy to it? Now my 77, yeah I'd put that back in my truck, but a 33...doubt it.

I'm going to try to pop the top off the Dave today and snap some shots. Maybe I'll be allowed to post them in this post cause I would like to see what the inside should look like. I think someone before me, got to tinkering inside. And if so, if I can put it back like it belongs, I think it'll work a lot better.

I just cranked the power knob wide open on the Dave and turned in the radios power all the way down. I cranked it back up just until I heard the amp key, another reason I think someone's been playing inside the amp. I felt like it should key even with the radio turned down. Although I am not sure what my radio is keying at that position. OH WELL! I know right now that on my Coaxial Dynamic's meter, I can key around 10 watts (with amp on) and swing to around 350 PEP and around 150 or so RMS. That low key with the amp on makes me think someone has been playing "radio doctor" with that amp...

i answered your e-mail brfore i saw this chop...that low key with full PEP is NORMAL(look at your S9, full PEP of 45 watts, no matter how much carrier, right?) i can turn my XL down to less then 1 watt-it will NOT key my amp. modulating on AM will get me 850+ watts-all with NO DEAD KEY WATTS! sounds crappy though.

leave the power knob cranked wide open, adjust wattage downward when neccessary from the RADIO power knob. that knob can be used when driving another amp, in the same manner as adjusting the radio.
