I'm planning to get an S-9 here soon and last weekend I picked up an Astron RS-7A power supply at a local Hamfest for $20 and I want to know if it will run the S-9.It puts out 5 amps continous and has a 7 amp surge.I know it says in Copper's catalog it takes 9.5 amps to run a 40 watt transmitter but a friend of mine says thats for continous watts not 1 watt deadkey w/ a 40 watt swing.

Hey V Twin Are you going to mount your Imax to that little pole? Looks kinda small and flimsy.
My sugestion.....Drill holes through that board ( looks like 2x8?) for the mounting bolts on your Imax or clamps for a pole and put it there. That is if that board and bracket is sturdy enough. If not I would obtain a new chimney mount kit.

P.S. I noticed some repairs on the bottom of your chimney. Make sure that structure has good integrity!!!

Well you probably know all of this I'm tellin ya. Just wanted to help. Good luck sir and I will be readin the mail for ya! 73's

Are you sure of that Lon? Cause I don't want to have to get another power supply.

Bluegrass,

Read the Above posts and you will see what the MAGNUM S-9 Puts out and then Read the Suggested Power Supply to use with a radio throwing out more than 40 watts.

Personally I would NOT Use or Recommend that anyone use anything under a 15 Amp Power Supply with any Dual Final Radio.

The final choice is yours and yours alone to make on what size Power Supply you choose to use.

my S9 works fine on an old 10 amp AIM. if i turn the pep wattmeter on(on same supply) the supply makes some ODD sounds! so, 10 amp would probably get you by, 15 amp as 808 says would be better. 9.5 amp(more or less) draw of S9 IS ITS PEAK draw. with my meter drawing 1/2 amp, it's maxed out. i put S9 on 40 amp, & delta force, meters & fans on 10 amp. things are good. i doubt 7 amp supply will cut it....

Are you saying I will need at least a 9.5 amp ps to run it but I won't get max performance unless I get something bigger?

Bluegrass,

No one is trying to tell you anything.

You asked a Question and we have All tried to help you with that Question from our own Actual Use with Magnum Radios.

Read the Posts above and the Link Below and then you can decide on what size Power Supply you will need or what you want to use.

I posted the Link for the Magnum S-9 so You can read the Specifications.

I also posted what Tripplite Recommends.

Or you can go DIRECT to the Tripplite Web Site and read it for yourself by clicking on the LINK below.

General Applications Guide

Hope this helps,

My S-9 pulls 7 Amps from a 13.8v supply.
Figure in some headroom and a 10 amp supply would work just fine....then again for a few more more dollars....
I rekon you should get the biggest supply you can afford..as long as it is 10 amps or more.
You never know when you are going to add an amp or get a bigger radio...shame to have to get another supply as well when you do upgrade.

Yeah thats what a friend told me to do.Get a dry cell bettery and use that to run the S-9 but how long can you run an S-9 on a dry cell and would a car battery be better or should i just get another power supply?

Oh and Dd18 right now I have two power supplies the Astron and a radio shack 3 amp. with a cigar plug so I'm pretty well set for power supplies.

Hay could I connect the two ps's I already have in parallel to make 10 amps total?

get a high amp carbattery it holds more energy i ran a batt charger and 40 amp batt on a dx-959 and a kl-203 doing about 100 watts am pep worked good if not just get an MFJ pwr supply there great i could key my 50 watt 2 meter and a 148gtl with a kl-203 all at once and it handles it great get like the 35 amper there like 139.99 and they will last forever and they have good warranty service just in case

USE CAR BATTERY BUT PUT SOMETHING OVER IT IF YOU HAVE KIDS OR DOGS BUT DONt USE ANYTHING METAL OR IT WILL BE WELDING.Also i would put a voltmeter on the battery as well just to be safe cuz if you over charge it it will leak.
