I'm excited that April is here. And according to rumor (hope this is not an April's fools) S-9 will come out in a special higher powered version for a short period of time. I might just take the dive on this one. This would be justification enough to buy another radio even though my Magnum 257 is tops. I will keep it too.

Well, after rereading the open forum I find that it will be 2006 before this model comes out. Let see...how many new radios will I have bought before then......

Mike
The S-9 receive is enough reason to buy.
Do you find the 257 shutting down when things get rough on the receive side?
The S-9 don't!

What do you mean shutting down? I wish I could compare the two. I am very pleased with the receive and output on the 257. It's one mean radio. Often, people think I'm on a base station.

I only run sideband. AM is only for tuning antennas.
By that I mean if you are listening on lowerside band (for example)and have some weak AM stations or a station on uppersideband you cannot receive anything legible on the lowerside. Even a strong station on LSB will sound distorted. The S-9 does not have this problem to any great degree.
the 2950DX is also badly affected.
On the other hand.....
The 257 audio is preferred by all stations receiving me at around S5 but low down and DX prefer the S-9. Someone likened the Ranger to a superstar driving a Zetagi Amp. That hurt so no more Ranger. Most local stations assume the 257 is the kenwood. Thats why I keep them both hooked up. Local on the 257 and DX on the S-9.
The memories on the 257 enable me to quickly check out the band to see what is happening and is always the first radio I turn on in the morning.
The 257 is my favorite but when I want to get down to business it is the S-9 (with a touch of echo)dd18

Wow, that S-9 looks like a large radio compared to the 257. I have to say the 257 has never been given a negative remark or comment on its audio and quality of audio. I'm always loud and clear as a bell. I have had hams on 10 meters express surprise when they learned I was on a 257 radio and not some Kenwood.

BTW, I really like your set up. You look like a serious radio guy.

Thx for the pic.

Wow!!!

Now there's a guy who likes the 257s! I hope they gave you a good discount on that many! :-)

Hey, I understand, though. I'd have that many President Grants if I could afford them! (Or find them!)

Yup the poor ol' TS570 has become a table for the magnums....We are getting great propagation the last few days to everywhere except the States and South America.

Dd18,

That is a nice setup! The Kenwood is tough, and I'm sure it is taking "table-duty" with no complaints.

What kind of amplifier is that to the right? Looks kind of like a Skywalker or Henry SS.

Yep, skip is good here in Mississippi, too! Luv that skip!

Maybe I'll catch you on the Copper net this weekend - Have a great day!

If conditions get much better we should start hearing the US. Listen out for 151 div as a lot of your guys are working 11m there now. God Bless them, they need a diversion. Spoke to 151/2AW254 Ray at 1030 UTC today. 5 and 9. He was running 12w and a wire dipole!
Amp is a Skymaster 1KW. Beautiful Amp. Excellent audio and runs about 700PEP driven by the S-9 and never gets warm. Lee assembled it for me and shipped it over. A new meaning to the word 'Solid' in 'solid state'
Feed it with 4ea 40Amp continuous Diamond GSV4000 switch mode power supplies in parallel.
No band switching, no tuning, no fuss.
I will be listening on 12m
No propagation from here to stateside but I hear the east coast of Aussi having a field day to USA in the mornings. (Your evening)

Love my 257...did the modulation modification and I swing all over the place.

Been talking to Australia the last three days barefoot. Even hit two stations all three days 02 Roadrunner and 44 Tazmania.

Doing 35+ on SSB and when it gets crowded I run around 150W SSB with the kicker and the magnum really does the job.

Sweet little radio..got mine for $150 brand new..great deal.
