I want a desk mic for my Magnum 257, and I am not happy with my Night Eagle.

Does Copper carry a god one that can be wired for the 257?

Hi Lon:

I have a Night Eagle already, and I am operating with a plug adapter speciffically for the 257, that I got from a "Professional" on the web.

When I install it, the audio (rec) levels are lower and it doesn'n seem to work well.

I wonder what would cause that?

Crackerjack,

Has it been acting this way since you first hooked it up with the mic adapter or over time with use?

Is your audio (receive) levels higher when the stock mic is hooked up?

Personally, I would suggest getting a 6 pin Mic Connector and wire it direct.

MAGNUM STOCK MICROPHONE WIRING:

Pin #1 ~ Microphone Audio / White
Pin #2 ~ Receive / Black
Pin #3 ~ Transmit / Red
Pin #4 ~ Down(Up w/22K Ohm Resistor) / Blue
Pin #5 ~ Ground / Shield w/yellow sleeve
Pin #6 ~ +13.8VDC / Brown

ASTATIC WIRING:

Pin #1 ~ WHITE
Pin #2 ~ BLACK
Pin #3 ~ RED
Pin #5 ~ SHIELD & BLUE

PIN 4 & 6 NO CONECTIONS

NOTE!
Make very sure that none of the wires can come into contact with PIN #6 as it has 13.8 VDC running to it.

As for what it colud be, the adapter could be worn or have a wire loose or shorting inside.

When using an adapter the mic cord can really give it a workout with a lot of use.

Also try a VERY SMALL screwdriver and close the sleeves a little (to make a tighter fit) in both the Mic Plug holes on the Adapter to Radio and your Astatic Mic Plug as these also get spread out with use over time.

Mic Adapters are very nice to use but they do require Maintenance the same as Factory Mic Connector plugs over time with use.

Hope this helps,

Lon

Lon:

Q. Has it been acting this way since you first hooked it up with the mic adapter?

Yes

Is your audio (receive) levels higher when the stock mic is hooked up?

Yes

And the Mic won't key transmit.

I imagine that it is the adapter, as it works the same on any mic I put on it.

As far as playing with it, remember -I am blind in one eye and have no real close up vision in the other.

Thanks..

I shipped the D-104 off this morning, to have it tweaked and wired for the Magnum. I should be pleased with that.

I used one on my RCI 2950 and made DX when other Mics couldn't even make connection.

Thanks..

However, I sure do like that Kenwood and will keep an eye (I only have one) out for a deal on one.

I just wired up an Astatic Echomax 2000 base mic to my 257 and it sounds great! I keep the echo down low (just barely cracked open)and get good unsolicited audio reports all the time.

The stock mic modulates the radio fully, however it made my voice a little too bassy. The echomax remedied that. I also use an Aries DM-452 on it with good results. I can't say enough good things about that 452. A great mic for such a low price!

Hope this posting helps.
