Has anyone ever used a 102" steel whip on a tri mag mount for a mobile installation?
I want to try this out but would like some feedback before I do. I think it would work fine as long as it has enough ground.

Cbblackbird,

Sorry never heard of anyone trying a Mag Mount setup before with a 102" steel whip.

Corncob / CEF166 and I have a guy about a block from us who Direct mounted one to his Roof with a stud mount and spring.

After all of his work he found his roof mount wilson worked and sounded better when he was running down the road than the 102" whip did.

My experience was exactly the opposite, but I did most of my driving around town with that car. Easy solution - use a fiberglass 102" whip. I tried both and chose the SS whip because it was a little less noticeable.

Thanks for the info. I guess a Wilson 1000 mag is still the way to go.

if a 102" whip WAS better, even at a standstill, the keydown guys in the lower power classes would use 'em...when reputations are at stake, NOTHING is overlooked.

No offense to anyone who might participate in keydowns.... but those folks aren't right in the head! I wouldn't trust their judgement on anything and certainly not anything radio related.

I can see why they would choose something other than a 102" whip to produce a stronger near field of radiation, but for overall performance there isn't anyting that matches a 102" whip.

If coils and chrome made antennas better you'd all be using one as a base antenna and the last time I checked the only coils in base antennas are for matching.

i don't use 'chrome' antennas. chrome doesn't make my cars any faster or trucks any tougher. i guess there's something to be said about NOT using chrome

So does anyone actually know just how much RF power a 102" steel whip can take? I've heard everything in the world but I wanna know what the antenna gurus here think? And on the subject of big corkscrew, beer can sized antennas that don't come for less than a days pay, the "junkie" old steel whip is still only $17.95 at my local Rat Shack here in Jacksonville, Fl. Thanks Mean_N_Nasty
P.S. Mine sit's at a healthy and 6 pill friendly 1.05- 1.1. I'm quite certain my mudduck mess wouldn't light up a bulb if I soldered it to my antenna, but i just wondered... plz, do tell!! :-)

I got one for you, kind of off subject but a buddy of mine was determined to mount his Antron A99 to mag mount, obviouly didnt work but it does make one heck of a bed mount antenna minus the problem of having to take it down to drive. But it has to be by far the best mobile antenna install ever.

Xmean_n_nastyx1 - Thousands and thousands and thousands and thousands of watts. More than any sane person would ever even consider running mobile - even more than those insane folks who compete in keydowns would ever run.

i don't participate in keydowns, i'd rather be dxing then fixing overstressed electronics parts. i don't use a 102" whip because what i do use works better for me. if a light blue plastic laundry basket provided enough gain and/or directivity for my truck to talk dx, i'd use that. for kicks, i may attempt to place the 102" whip that read 2.5:1 swrs last time i tried, back in place of my predator 10k that...does NOT even move the needle on my diamond sx100 with 100 watts of carrier. & stays at UNDER 1.3:1, yes, LESS THEN 1.3:1, over 80 channels.
NAH. why bother. my predator does EXACTLY what it needs to. the 102" whip WOULD NOT.

Ok, here goes....strapping on my "You've got to be kidding" hat.....I have in my mobile(after extensive money poured in to the charging system) a "BIG DAWG" 5k linear, being driven by a Galaxy 88HL DX(peaked and tuned, pushing about 45-50 watts alone) my antenna is a 102" stainless steel whip. I know the SWR is 1.1:1, due to the antenna being grounded by #4 wire. The antenna has also been OHM'd to near perfect specs. I have yet to have any trouble with my 102" whip. PLUS.....I love the FREE car wash I get everytime I enter a digital car wash. The only down side to it is.....I set off alarm systems all over town late at night.

102" Stainless on a Tri Mag mount, yes it will work I have a buddy that has this exact setup on his lifted suburban. Draw backs? Yup antenna hits those pesky stoplights and cannopy's at the gas station. The 102" Stainless and the Francis 5 1/2' Hot Rod are the only two whips I would ever use. Although I do like my "wannabe" Penetrator much more.

Shaved head here too!

I like to call it tempting inevitability!

It's good after you get used to it, 7 years clean and that first big-ol drop of rain still sends a shockwave down my spine! Fortunately I have a dark skin composition so I never burn and never wear a hat, EXCEPT WINTER!

For folks who have never shaved their head… Your head is tougher than your face, you can get flat-out brutal with a razor and rarely suffer a cut!

With my complexion I would probably distract pilots if I shaved my head, and I live in a busy flight corridor.

Seriously though, aside from "doming" I never saw any benefit to shaving your head over just running a set of clippers over it every couple of weeks.

'a "BIG DAWG" 5k linear, being driven by a Galaxy 88HL DX(peaked and tuned, pushing about 45-50 watts alone)'-HMMMMMMMM? with no driver, that 5kw amp & 50 watts is probably getting out about 250 watts-maybe. hardly enough to set off the carwash. come thru the PA, that's a different story

HP,

I did the clipper thing but found that it got messy. Stuff hides in the tiniest of sink surronnd cracks, etc and can fly far! I shave in the shower, right down the drain, no worries, no mess.

See, I went from hair down to my posteroior to a VERY tight flat top (long story). That got expensive every few weeks from an old-school COMPETENT barber. Did the clippers (see above) now I'm happy. I do agree with you, I would not try it if you are fair skinned. You will hate it and fight burning ALL THE TIME!
